And I’m not talking Charlie Brown and Snoopy… It's Friday afternoon, the vending machine at work, where one usually gets pretzels something different happened. “Peanuts, I haven’t had them in a while”, the big dummy said to himself... The big dummy even went further and rationalized the situation; “I’m going to workout tonight, peanuts will help with energy”.
On the way home a couple of hours later a not so normal gut felt a little crampy. The big dummy got home and thought to himself, “maybe I should eat, perhaps I’m a little blocked up, some food should push it out”. After a small dinner the pain started, a kinda pain that the big dummy was very familiar with but hasn’t felt in about two years… The big dummy’s lovely (and not a dummy) wife finds him lying in bed curled up in a ball. Finally after hours of cramps, heating pads, water, water, water, the big dummy felt better at about 4:00 am. The moral of this story… Bill is a big dummy. 6M$S (Bill) |

Bill is only a big dummy if he has peanuts tonight for dinner, which I bet is unlikely to happen.
Other than that, I know "they" (the infamous "they") say that peanuts can cause blockages, and this time for you it did, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen every time you have them. Although, if it was me, I would probably put them on my "I'm only going to eat this if I want to spend my weekend in bed" food list. That sucks. I'm sorry - but at least there wasn't a hospital trip and your lovely wife was probably a better caretaker than the local ER staff... Good luck. And remember, peanut M&M's aren't any safer, even thought that chocolate candy coating would fool you into believing they are. Don't trust the green one's especially. |

lol.
Did you drink with them? For future reference (when you have peanuts tomorrow.. again), I noticed coffee (nescafe!) or another thinning drink helped quicker than water for me. Tea, or prune juice (yum?!) could work well also. |

Been there . . . done that! "But they taste so good!" are always my famous last words!!! I like them salted in the shell . . . mm-m-m-m!
I limit myself to less than a dozen or so actual peanut pieces, but have been known to go overboard. This week for me it was fried sliced mushrooms. It is morel season back in the midwest soon, and I crave them even though we can't get them around here, so I just use the white ones in the stores, slice, dip in egg and flour, and fry them just like my mom used to do. Too many will do the same as peanuts, though . . . but gotta have 'em every so often, y'know. And you are not dumb . . . just selectively intelligent!!! |

Man this post makes me think about the nut laden fruit cake that’s sitting in the fridge still sealed up in its Christmas wrapper. All those pecans and walnuts mmmmm! I love them so much. At least my grandmother had been informed that I can’t have them anymore, so I won’t have to endure this torture next year.

Bill,
I did the same thing but, I had a senior moment and ate too much cheese and caramel mixed popcorn. It tasted so good, I just forgot what might happen and I suffered the whole night also. Live and learn!! Keep Smiling Jim |

Was that Garret's popcorn? I haven't been brave enough to try any after surgery, but oh do I miss it! But, after what I've read here, maybe I don't want to push it!

Tertenpin,
It was Garret's .........very had to resist. If you eat a small amount and make sure you chew it well, everything should be okay. (I just had to try it !!!!!!!) |

I am sure this is something that we all do! I decided one day that I really needed a small taste of trail mix. Use to live on the stuff during the summer while camping...
Let me tell you, I didn't get a blockage but it hurt like ---- coming out as I obviously didn't chew well enough and things were still too chunky I still eat nuts occasionally but I learned the hard way that everything is better in moderation ** Christine ** UC dx Oct 2003; Step 1 - 10/8/2005; TakeDown - 05/19/2006 The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace. Similar story. I love salted peanuts too. I too have learned about moderation over the years and chewing!
When I have a few handfuls I chew until they are the texture of peanut butter as I was told. I don't buy them often. Just not worth the rusk if I forget to chew and I have done that a few times with a few things! Bill, you are not a dummy. Just feeling like a normal person which we are not!LOL! |

I never get a blockage from nuts, but the port of exit knows the meaning of "true grit" when I get silly!

After a near total bowel obstruction not caused by food during my first pregnancy, I decided to be extra cautious this time around and make sure I didn't cause a food obstruction if there was a chance of other obstructions.
Got to 24 weeks pregnant, when the blockage cleared last time and, lo and behold, fresh Hawaiian pineapple at the grocery store. "I'll just have a few small pieces, to get a taste" I said to my hubby as I wiped the juice from my lips. Well, those few small pieces caused a - thankfully! - small obstruction. It passed within 2 hours and needless to say I am fruit and veggie phobic for the rest of this pregnancy. After the baby, though, I fully intend to have a big bowl of fruit. Between chewing carefully and not eating too much at once, it just may take me a week to eat it! We've all given in to a favorite food...glad this time it didn't cause TOO much turmoil. As for nuts, cashews at Christmas are the only time I take the risk and then I chew them to a pulp... |

Hey Everybody,
I started about 8 months ago buying peanuts. Oh they were so good. Ate them everyday almost. About 2 weeks ago woke up in the early morning hour with a blockage. PEANUTS! No more for me! Marie |
