Liquid diet not working. Still having pain, still having gas. Forget that; I'm eating. I have an appointment at GI clinic on Monday.
But, seriously, how long can this go on? Every day, constantly? I drink water, I get pains. Gas is constant. I am SO SICK AND TIRED OF NOT FEELING AT LEAST OKAY!!! What else can I do? Does anyone else have just permanent gas? Do I just have to deal with this forever? Sounds minor, sounds petty. IT ISN'T!!! It is disrupting my life immensely and making me very, very frustrated/angry/scared/depressed. I mean, really, three surgeries isn't enough? Is it really too much to ask that I be able to go to work/drink water/eat with my family without being in pain? Gin "Hope is a good thing; maybe the best thing." -- Red, The Shawshank Redemption |

You're doing something like Ensure, right? I wonder if there's an ingredient in it that is causing problems. You must be so frustrated. Or rather way beyond frustrated - and angry. I wonder if you can cut out the ensure and just try warm/hot tea to see if that alleviates the problem. If it does, then start reintroducing things. I know, I know, living on tea could make a person a tad ballistic, but if it gets you to the point of getting rid of the pain, then it's worth it.
Other than that, I have no suggestions. Good thing you're going to the doctor on Monday. Make sure they HEAR you!!!! Good luck. kathy *********************************************************** Lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it's been..... Grateful Dead |

Hi Gin,
I am lactose intolerant and tried ensure and even though it's not supposed to have milk products, it did not sit well with me and gave me plenty of gas. I realize your situation is different, but I would look at the ingredients in the supplement you are taking. Mary Ellen |

Hey Gin, I'm in the same boat with no relief. What happened with the doctor's visit?

If you have tried all the diet recommendations and tried adding probiotics without any positive effect, you may just have bacterial overgrowth that probiotics cannot handle. A short course of Flagyl or Cipro should fix you up quickly. Once you are done with the antibiotics, you should start probiotics to help keep things balanced.
Most intestinal gas is caused by the action of bacteria on undigested carbohydrates (including lactose intolerance). If you have ruled out dietary intolerances, then bacterial overgrowth is often the problem. Of course, swallowed air can be a problem and this is why you should avoid carbonated drinks, chewing gum, and use of straws. Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

Hi,
I combat gas with herbal tea. It sounds very hippie, I know, but it works. The three gas-busters are mint, fennel and chamomile. Worth a try - it won't harm you anyway. My homemade metamucil helps against wind, too. At least, it does for me. Good luck! Gas is so painful "Today I'm 51 % sweetheart and 49 % dragon*. So don't push it. I also have lived with gas problem for 10 years. The ONLY way I have ever been able to fart is to lie on my stomach on the bed or floor or disabled public toilet floor if I am out and can find one, and push down. My brother said it looks like Im sky diving. Not that I generally do this infront of anybody.
If I dont get rid of the gas the pain is extreme until I do, so if I am out and unable to fart I pretty much have to drive home at top speed just to get rid of it. |

Are you drinking with your meals? Someone on this site got a tip from a nurse to not drink anything with meals but to wait until half an hour or more afterwards before drinking. It has helped cut down the gas for me in a huge way!
Hey, it won't hurt to try it! I hope you find some relief soon. "...all things work together for the good of those that love Him..." Romans 8:28 |

I found that for a while after my TD I couldn't handle anything with Dairy or lactose in it. I had to completly cut out milk, cheese, yogurt, etc and that helped some.
Have you seen your doctor and ruled out pouchitis or bacterial overgrowth as Jan mentioned? Turns out I had a mild case of pouchitis and when I started on the Cipro/Flagyl things got much better in a day!!! I have also started a new Probiotic called Tuzen and it can be found OTC at Shopper's Drug Mart here in Ontario. I hope you get this resolved soon. I think most of us here can understand your pain ** Christine ** UC dx Oct 2003; Step 1 - 10/8/2005; TakeDown - 05/19/2006; pouchitis dx Dec 2006 The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace.
