Most of you are much more kind than I would be. No wonder the professor wrote "Enough said." He hopes that the issue will go away and that you won't complain further because his conduct was, and still is, reportable.
I write as someone who is married to a man who was president of a private catholic college for 8 years and then president of a state university in another area of the country for almost 9 years. The department chairman should be advised of this professor's conduct. If you are afraid that the professor will retaliate with a bad grade, share that fear with the department chairman. I bet the professor will end up giving you every break grade-wise, because otherwise you will complain again. If you don't want to take action with an administrator, you can at least post a terrible, awful post on the internet. There's some site that "Rate(s) Your Professor." Google those words and the correct URL address will probably pop up. My husband, who is semi-retired but still teaches, says that his colleagues really care about their ratings on that site because students are now checking into it before signing up for classes. Not only was the professor wrong to share personal information--he got the facts wrong on your disease and thus spread misinformation about you. When I think about it, spreading misinformation is a kind of slander. "Enough said"!!!! |

The site for rating a professor is RateMyProfessors.com. Other students should know about your professor's judgment, or lack of it!

While your communication to your professor may not have been, technically speaking, a "privileged" communication, according to the statutory or common law of your state, it was nevertheless made in confidence and he breached your confidence. It was no less egregious because it was not privileged, and I still hope that you will follow the advice given above by those in the academic community. I.e., report the jerk to the appropriate authority.
Good luck. Rudolph (an attorney). Diagnosed with Chronic Ulcerative Colitis in 1986. First-step of 2-step j-pouch surgery January 9, 2006. Takedown June 16, 2008. |

Your professor did WHAT?!?! My god, I would've drop-kicked him right then and there. First of all, get the facts straight, as IBS is completely different, and secondly, where the heck does he or she get the cojones to announce something so personal to a roomful of people? I would definitely report the professor, and since everyone knows now anyway, you might want to announce to the class what you really DO have and let them know the differences between IBS and IBD, since your idiot professor couldn't. What a toad.

The professor put you in an awful position. Don't let is just go away, at least talk to your advisor or another professor about possible steps to take.
Good luck with everything. |

You were doing the right thing in telling your prof why you'd be late to class. It sounds like he has no consideration for anyone's feelings nor the feelings of the class. The class thought he was a jerk for saying it. You told him how it affected you, and he gave you an insensitive response. I don't think you will get what you want from him. You can't win with losers. Some profs have no idea what their impact is on students. I hope you don't have to take any more classes with him. I hope you can move on from here. Perhaps you could go through the office for students with disabilities this time? Or maybe there is someone there you could talk to about this to get advice about what to do or not to do next. You've got enough on your plate without having to worry about an insensitive prof, too! Best wishes with your studies.

Just wanted to thank everyone for your responses. I am currently going through the paper work of student with disabilities. I had this all filled out at my prior college. But was doing so well when i transfered that I decided not to go through it. So I will now have it documented and its legally confidential to and I am going to discuss the issue with this professor with the disability office and see what actions they think I should take. Don't want to take an action that will affect my grade so going to make sure to be smart about it.

I had the Jpouch a year before I started college. I graduated in 2005 with a chemistry degree. It was difficult some mornings and sometimes I was a no show to class. I told all of my professors in scheduled office visits and fortunately all they wanted was an e-mail notifying them about my attendance to class and they would make sure I received all the notes from that class and sometimes they would open the labs so I can finish them when I was able to. If that situation happened to me I would loose trust in that professor and make formal complaint to withdraw the class without penalty, because you do have a legitimate issue to argue with student/faculty affairs.
