Hey there,
Does anybody else have a hard time processing meat lately? Pork, beef and now chicken are causing too much burn. Doesn't matter how I cook it I seem to suffer 6-10 hours later and it is making my butt raw for 2 days. J-Pouch life is great except for the buttburn... I am really healthy(other than not having a colon) so I guess turning to a veggie lifestyle might workout. Funny thing... I was a meatcutter for 20 years before UC stopped me from doing it(imagine my store having a ecoli breakout and they blame it on the guy who poops all day GO COLTS!!!! David |

Meat is my friend. I don't eat pork, shellfish, or most farm raised fish, but otherwise, I have no problem with it. I really only eat meat and vegetables. Is there anything else that you are eating along with the meat that might be to blame?

could it be the seasoning you are using to cook your meat that is causing stomach upset? The only reason i suggest this is because I notice when I eat meat (chicken and steak) my bowel habits actually improve. I don't use the bathroom as frequently and the consistency is thicker. When I eat alot of carbs or veggies I usually have looser stools.

Agreed... willing to bet it is what you are eating with the meat. Something to think about.
However, I do have some issue with red meat but I don't think it has anything to do w/ the fact that I have a pouch. It just kind of sits in my belly; very hard to digest. But I think even normal, coloned people have that issue too. I hope Peyton & the Colts pound the Saints. |

Don't think it is the seasoning...I don't use anything but a little salt and pepper. I have tried cooking it many ways so I could pinpoint the problem side dish and nothing stands out. Pork is by far the worst meat.
Thin grilled steak with rice is the only thing that doesn't cause problems. Any other beef just sits there until comes out like battery acid. Good thing eggs are very good for my pouch and my cholesterol level is so low that I can eat as many as I want. The buttburn is calming down a bit so my rant is almost over. thanks for the help Go Colts David |

Meat doesn't give me problems unless it's particularly fatty, fried, etc. Red meat is harder to digest; lean, smaller grilled bits are better. Pork is slowly leaving my list... The more I read about it, the more unhappy I am with it.
Random suggestion: I used to be a vegetarian (for several years). When I was switching back to eating meat (very long story), my stomach couldn't process it at first. BUT papaya juice helped a lot. Someone told me that it has the right enzyme in it that our stomachs use to digest meat. Don't know if that's true or not, but I can tell you that drinking papaya juice definitely helped. Shelby, I think I recall you mentioning (at an earlier juncture) that you use digestive enzymes. However, I was wondering if you could be low on HCl and if something like Betaine HCl could help when you eat meat?
I might try the papaya suggestion mentioned. I used to use pancreatin as a digestive aid, but didn't notice a significant enough of difference to keep shelling out for it. I'd like to try something new, but I don't entertain the trial and error process right now. Fortunately, I don't have the "sitting" meat problem that you and Dave describe, but could use some help nonetheless. |

Interesting tip about the supplement. It is worth looking into further. Great idea.
I get a heavy feeling after I eat red meat. For example, I recently made chili but substituted ground turkey instead of ground beef. I noticed after I ate the turkey chili that I did not have the heaviness I remember experiencing. Dave, I hope your symptoms get better. |

No meat since thursday and things are going much better...Buttburn under control and I even slept 6 hours straight last night - something which I don't do often. Doesn't bother me too much not eating meat. There are plenty of good options.

I can sympathize. I could not tolerate meat much at all after takedown. Be patient and give it some time. Now for me 3+ yrs later, I am again OK with most meats. Give some probiotics a try, and of course the mantra is chew, chew, chew.
Cheers, Mark |

I use a Cultrelle probiotic everyday for the last 2 years. Pepper has not been a problem for me. My J-Pouch is 2 plus years old.
I think I have a yeast infection going on that is making things more sensative to buttburn - I am going to try some clotrimazole cream for a couple of days and see if that helps... Thanks David |

The kinds of food we eat dictate the amount of digestive juices needed for digestion, I believe. Fatty foods are tougher to digest - so you're probably ending up with more passing through to the end depending on how fast things move.
I can't stand lettuce anymore. Undigestable cellulose - means all those juices pass on through undigested. Result: serious butt burn. Maybe you have the same issue right now with meats. I don't seem to have trouble with meat. Steve "...it came to pass..." - I Thess. 3:4b (NASB) UC diagnosis age 12. Step 1 Feb. 2006. Step 2 July, 2006. Step 3 Oct. 2006. Hernia repair Nov. 2006. I just found this post. I hope someone will respond. I have a huge problem eating beef and drinking milk. I have a huge stomach ache for hours. Nothing seems to help but going to bed. Has anyone had any success taking anything to help with pain? I know I should avoid it altogether and I am used to it by now but every once in a while I like to splurge.
