I am awaiting to see Dr. Fazio until the end on July and am on predinzone while I wait! I have already gainied 10lbs since I have been on it!! I don't know why but when I am in a flare I gain weight instead of losing it. Just have to vent about none of my clothes fitting!! Please someone give me some hope that if I do go through with the surgery I will not have this problem!

Getting off the prednisone was one big factor for me when deciding on surgery ... I just couldn't take it. It did freaky things to me like it does for many others. It has almost been two years for me since surgery ... I feel great. I take 2 meds and those have nothing to do with UC - this is down from 20!
I will say though, now that I can eat just about anything I am fat too!

Dear Shawanna,

When you taper off the Prednisone, I'll bet the pounds start to come off. They did for me. Keep the faith!

I always felt my abdomen was swollen just from the flare, then add the prednisone and I just felt so puffy.
But the good news is it does "deflate".
My face looks so much thinner, people keep telling me I am so skinny when in reality I have gained weight.

I have to say though since surgery my body has changed a lot. I guess maybe I am getting the proper nutrition- I just have gotten a lot of muscle tone back without really doing much besides walking a lot.

Best of luck with the upcoming months!

I was on Pred for about 3 months and I gained 30 lbs!! The only other time I gained that much weight was when I was pregnant. I even went to the gym and ate when and it just would not come off. As soon as I went off the pred I lost 10 pounds right away. The puffiness went away in my face. And well....surgery took off another 10 pounds. I am at a good weight now and I have just started back at the gym and I feel great. Once you stop the pred I am sure you will lose the pounds. Most of us are use the being so thin before our surgeries because of our illnesses so when we put on weight it is unusual.
Good luck!!

Ohhh, prednisone. My mom still reminds me of when I was on it. A 9 year old screaming "MOM I WANT A HOTDOG!" was never easy to deal with. I gained tons of weight, and lost it once I got off it. Although, my face is definitely still puffy from it, even though I got off it 6 years ago.

But really, don't worry about the weight. We've all been there, and I can tell ya, it sucks. But look on the brightside- some people with colitis are grossly skin and bones.

Oh and once you get your pouch....you can eat anything without gaining weight. Atleast I can. My daily nutrition consists of 2 waffles, a bagel, sausage sandwich, 4 cookies, nachos and cheese, then 10 chicken mcnuggets and a cheeseburger and usually another dinner after I go to the bathroom hahaha. And I've been doing this for years and am only 120lbs (I'm 5'2"). Kids at school are either jealous, or think I have bulimia. But hey, it works for me!

I was on 250 mg of prednisone a day so you can imagine how puffy I got! Frowner
But the good news is that is does come off and it only took a couple of months for me to loose it all. You'll be back to normal soon.

Oh Cat! I think you win the prize! Wink You looked nothing like yourself!
I was a 12-14 before surgery (thank goodness I didn't gain a LOT of weight all of my years on prednisone) but I am wearing an 8 these days, no problem. It does come off, especially the face. I think you have to be careful though, which is why I haven't lost more weight than I have, because (at least I) was used to losing a TON of weight when I flared-up. I don't have that 'luxury' any longer!
I could probably weigh less, but I haven't been exercising. Glad the warmer weather is around the corner.

Wow Cataja- that is incredible.
Congrats on getting back to a comfortable place.
You look awesome!

Like Shelby, I agree, I was used to the quick weight drop of UC. I would lose 15 lbs in a few days.
