I am in a class called "Arts Integration in the K-8 classroom". Basically it is there because unfortunately most school districts cut art because funding goes elsewhere.I could discuss that issue for hours so I'll leave it at that.

So here is my quandry...

I have to create a book using just images. This is going to be presented to my peers. A world issue, something we would change or help. When asked our topic, I just wrote down medicine. But I would really like to get into UC/ surgery just to make some people aware.

As an "artist" most of my work in that class has been more controversial so I'm not afraid of taking on any weird looks but I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for images to use. I was thinking of using some pics of my own scars but photoshopping them or using an actual zipper.

I always would describe some of the pain of UC as spaghetti (my intestines) being twisted by a fork. So maybe some pasta?

I know this is a random post but I figured who better to brainstorm with than people who have had to probably symbolically explain their experiences because most people just don't "get" it.

I saw an ad once for Crohn's and UC, it was for a website www.ihaveoptions.com (i think). Anyway, they used barbed-wire. I would say that pretty much sums up the pain of your guts when you are suffering.

good luck with your project, I am sure you'll do well!

I love the idea of the spaghetti!! It's something tactful that the kids can easily relate to! With the kids being of varying ages, keeping it simple seems best! I'm guessing the project is something that may be used in the classroom..? Good thinking Kar!!

How about someone chained to a toilet, watching other people do normal things - play sports, play with children, go to a party? Not very subtle, but gets the message across: UC robs you of a normal life.

Like the play on "outside looking in" inside looking out.
Being unable to do what everyone else is.
So true! I don't miss those days!

I'd take a photo of a bathroom with a pillow and blanket lying on the floor, like a makeshift bed. I'd label it:
"This is where I live."
That's what UC was for me.

Ps: If you can't label it, I'd put a "Home Sweet Home" floor mat outside the bathroom door.

Another thought:
One of the things I just love about life with my j-pouch is not having the sight of blood every day. It used to really get me down. My heart lurches every month when blood appears, until I think about what date it is and realize it's just my period Smiler. So, a bit graphic, but how about putting red food coloring in the toilet bowl so you get the sight of bright red water in there?

Thanks for the suggestions- I like the Home Sweet Home. I used to call it my office because that's where all my business was done.
