Hi Chelsea,
Good luck. I hope things are still going well. I quit smoking about 6 years ago. I was a 2 pack a day smoker and had smoked for about 25 years. It was not an easy go and I cheated a couple times but finally put them down. The rewards are teriffic! You will be so proud of yourself. I say I'm addicted to Juicy Fruit gum. I have to have a piece morning and afternoon. I always have 2 pieces in my pocket everyday. I now hate the smell of smoke. Now I can smell that my clothes smell clean. Before everybody said I always smelled like cigarettes. Hang in there and good luck. You CAN do it! Just remember if you fail dont stop trying. Its just a little setback. Start from that point again. Kissing a non-smoker is always much, much better too

I quit so may times I forgot how many, and sometimes for a month or two, but something would always come up to get me wanting just ONE, one, thats a laugh. But one evening I smoked the last cig. in the pack. To test myself was to see how long I could go without buying a pack( I only bought one pack at a time) and so the story goes,I never bought another pack and that was 14 yr's ago '93. I started at 13 and smoked for 50yr's, I'm 77 now, I wasn't a heavy smoker no more than a pack in 24 hr's. Maybe you could try the same thing, `~see how long you can go before you buy a pack. Now days they are very expensive. I use to tell everyone I quit but the last time I didn't because I wasn't sure, and it worked. Maybe it's best not to tell anyone just incase you fall off the wagon, cuz you'll hear them say "I thought you quit smokin!!" Keep trying and good luck.

I quit smoking cold turkey after about 12 years, pack a day. I wish I could say it was hard, but for me, it wasn't real hard. Perhaps I don't have that addiction gene or whatever it is. I craved it, thought about it, wanted it. But, I could avoid it.
It helps to have someone quit with you I think. One thing though...once you quit, you cannot stand the smell of other people's smoke. You walk into an elevator where a smoker was (not smoking, but just the odor from his clothes stinking up the elevator) or smoker's around the doorway of a restaurant, etc., it can make you nauseous! You will never be able to sleep in a smoking motel room again. It is so permeated into the carpets and mattress. Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

Jan,How right you are about smelling smoke. I came out of Home depot the other day and someone must have smoked just before in the area, and I got a headace from the smell so bad that it gave me the wiggle vision for about 20min. I had a dance teacher that tought at my studio and she smelled so bad of smoke that it actually had my studio smelling like stale smoke, this was from her clothes because she didn't smoke inside.

Dear Chelsea,
Congratulations on making such a brave and intelligent decision. Good luck and continued good health! I started smoking my senior year in high school and continued through college. A few weeks before graduation, I did what you did and just said, okay, tomorrow is the day, and I did it, and I've never regretted it and always been so happy that I did. And it's been (egads) 31 years since I've had a smoke. You go, girl! Diagnosed with Chronic Ulcerative Colitis in 1986. First-step of 2-step j-pouch surgery January 9, 2006. Takedown June 16, 2008. |

Compared to day two, day one was paradise. I've had a lot of bad days, but man, today really was something special. I've got myself so worked up over these stupid effing cigarettes that I can't even go to the bathroom. Tried coffee, fruit, phospho soda.....not working. Can't believe I'm saying this, but diharrea would be really nice right now. I couldn't even tell you how miserable I feel right now.

CHELSEA....
Sorry you are feeling so miserable.....I hope some of that coffee, fruit or phospho soda has started to work for you..... You have gotten tons of good advice here......but sometimes it's just too hard to quit cold turkey.. my friend smoked for 30 + yrs.....one thing that he did was to take 10 cigarettes a day and put them out on the counter..that would be the limit for the day.....after awhile..it was maybe 5 a day....the times that he enjoyed them the most....if the morning, after each meal and bedtime is the favorite times...that's what he would have for the day....then you have to keep limiting yourself.. By buying a pack at a time...he was able to limit himself more and more and then just quit....it's like weaning yourself off a drug....sometimes your body just can't take the cold turkey route..... I also was a smoker... I was able to just tell myself I'm not smoking anymore and quit....some people just can't do that...and that's OK...everyone has their own way of getting through it..... Whatever you have to do to quit..I know you'll find the strength to do it...Don't give up! Char......... |

Hi Chelsea,
Great Job on going 2 days. 1 more day and the physical addiction is gone. It helped me to stay away from everyone that smoked and partied for awhile when I quit. Cigs are the hardest to quit because they are everywhere. I grew up in the L.A./Hollywood area in the 80's so I had to quit quite a few "habits" and cigs were the hardest. Try to focus on the positives (money saved, breathing, not smelling so bad Be proud of that!Keep up the fight, don't quit being a non-smoker. David |

I lied! Day 3 is even worse!
Soph, I don't know how my moms doing, mainly because we don't talk anymore. Because shes got jimmy, his kids, you know, everythings perfect. I just don't fit into that equation good enough, so I guess I'm just not her daughter anymore. I am going to just stop talking before I write a novel about how much I hate my mom right now. Nicotine withdrawal can make you hate everybody, so I imagine a mom who treats you like a disposable kid would be up on top of the list of wrath. But, three days is three days, and be proud of it!! Keep yourself distracted and for gosh sakes, stay away from smokers for a while!! Use nicotine patches if you need to.

You're doing amazingly well. Have you ever thought about one of those heart/lung machines where they put you into a medical coma for a month or so? That might do the trick..... I'm sorry about your relationship with your mother. That stinks.

Kath, a medically induced coma sounds pretty freakin' good right now.
And like REALLY, what is going on with my intestines? I go to the bathroom fine during the day, but right after dinner, its like everything just shuts down. It's kind of DRIVING ME UP THE WALL. CHELSEA Perm Ileo march 11th- still battling e.coli/staph/intraabdominal abscesses/bacteremia. |
