Wanted to just say thanks to all who have helped us in this decision. Tom is having step one today and I am sure we will be accessing this board more in the coming months.
I am so anxious. I know I just need to take one day at a time. We are at Mayo and I am confident he is getting the best care possible.

The very best to you and Tom today...it's an anxiety filled time for you, but you are in one of the best places possible for treatment! It's so difficult to watch a loved one go through all of this. Let us know how everything is going and please feel free to pm me anytime. Blessings!

Good luck to you both and here's hoping for a completely event-free stay. Let us know how it goes.

Hi tryan,
Best of luck to you both. My wife Monique just had her takedown yesterday. Her first step was on Jan 2nd. As a spouse, my advise is to stay strong, positive, supportive at all times. I think it really helps. Take full advantage of this site. There is no substitute for 1st hand knowledge. There are so many people here willing to help, advise or just plain listen. My wife even lucked out and has began a friendship with one member here. Kind of like her personal guide these past few months. We wish you guys nothing but the best! Jeff and Monique

Thanks for all your well wishes. So far so good. Tom's surgeon said his surgery went exactly as expected with no complications. He got to his room at about 5 yesterday and they already had him walking last night (that seemed extremely cruel!) and this morning.
He is in a lot of pain this morning but his bowels have already woken up and he will be on a full liquid diet today.
One icky thing is I am pretty sure every tube/bag coming out of him leaked some overite. I guess the ostomy bags in surgery are not very good. He has an ET nurse coming this morning. We are optimistic things are progressing so well! Can I take a deep breath yet?

Keep taking deep breaths all the time Wink
The main things to watch, in my opinion, are dehydration and skin issues. I.e. keep him drinking liquids as much as possible, and if there are any leaks, deal with them fast so the skin around the ostomy doesn´t get sore. Other than that, you´re doing exactly what he needs most - being there for him! Never underestimate the healing power of a loving hand stroking a forehead, gentle fingers running through hair, and a good old hug Smiler Good luck to you both - keep in touch!
