My husband had his first surgery(colon removed and J pouch created) on May 1, 2007. His 2nd surgery (takedown) is July 10, 2007. He had so many problems the first time around. He had an infection on his incision and had to be opened and remain open. He was put on a wound vac for 6 weeks. About a week after his surgery he had an abcess and had to have a drain put in. You really find out who your real friends are at a time like this. We have had both supportive and non-supportive people in our lives. I'm really nervous for this next surgery. It's hard to watch your loved one go through this. Not to mention his job place was supportive at first. Since all the setbacks, they are giving him a hard time. Are there any suggestions for a smooth ride for the #2 surgery??

Thanks,
Jeans

Actually, my husband just got home from work and one of the bosses (we believe)is trying to get him to quit. They said he was gone for 6 weeks and now has to pay a cobra payment. They said after 3 days it's med leave. They have jeopardized our coverage, hopefully they didn't leave a gap. Any suggestions??

You should post this up in Need Help Now and you'll probably get more responses.

I'm not sure, but under the FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) your husband may have certain rights.

Usually, just because one experiences complications with one surgery does not mean he will experience complications with subsequent surgeries. I certainly hope this is the case for your husband.

Ditto what Kathy said. If your husband's employer has x number of employees, the employer is subject to the Family Medical Leave Act, and the Human Resources office/director should be able to advise you/him about it. If you can't get the answers you need there, check with your local bar association for the names of a few attorneys who specialize in employment law to walk you through this and make sure that your husband's rights are protected.
