Hi there, thought I would post here again. After a long (over a year) wait my husband is going in for his 3rd last (hopefully) surgery. I guess its called the "takedown"? He got sick last sept with C-diff (a especially evil variety or something that didnt' respond to any antibiotics at all) and lost his colon to it within 2 months, it is still unclear if this triggered UC or what since he had no history of it at all. All water under the bridge now though. He had the pouch surgery in June and aside from having to have a PICC line for fluids once in a while and having a nice big hernia, his year of recovery has been uneventful. Doctors at CCF say he is good to go for tomorrow when he loses the bag (they may or may not fix the hernia too). I am cautiously optimistic at this point, it seems like nobody who has this surgery doesn't end up with some annoying or worse complication at some point in their post surgical life but he is determined to follow this through. This site has been so helpful to me and reading other peoples experiences have been both scarey and comforting. Well wish us luck tomorrow! Kim

Thanks guys! Well its been two weeks post op...I guess it is going well. He goes 7 to 12 times a day depending on what he eats. Seems that his biggest problem right now is the buttburn....what is the best product for that? He is using flushable wipes and A&D but after two weeks it is not working anymore. Should he even be using flushable wipes? Any suggestions would be great and I am off to do research in the forums now...thanx again!

Hi, my husband always has butt burn. Try the Calmoseptine Cream, he goes no where without it. The pharmacist can order it, no prescription needed. Also, find the right wipes. Some are just too harsh. Best of luck to both of you!!!! I hope he continues to recover well.

It sounds like he's doing pretty well, actually. The big guns butt cream is iLEX. You can order it by clicking on the icon at the top of this page. Remember to use vaseline or some other lubricant over the top of it so the gluts aren't glue(t)d together. The other product I use is Nupercainal. It's over the counter and you can find it by the Preparation H. It has an analgesic in it which immediately calms things down.

Thanks for the info...I ordered a sample of the Calmoseptine to see if it will work for him....and the analgesic is a great idea, something I can get today. Yeah I think he must be doing well if he is only going 8 times a day on average after only 2 weeks. He is not very organized and tends to eat whatever is put in front of him whenever, so if I am not there to intervene, he suffers the results. I think its going to take awhile for it to sink in that eating is no longer a free-for-all but has to be carefully considered in advance. When he had the bag he ended up eating ANYTHING without care, even if it meant emptying it 25 times a day. I tried to tell him that those days are over and he needs to pay more attention to what he is eating.....

Sounds like he's doing just fine. You may just want to relax on the diet control thing for a while. For me, I had butt burn the first few months no matter what I ate, so I may as well eat what I liked. Now, I very seldom get butt burn. My output is probably higher than those who micromanage their diets, but it really is of little concern to me, as long as there is no urgency.

He'll figure it out. The main thing is to chew well, take the time to enjoy the meal, and avoid foods that cause major issues when you are away from home. He may also find it is better to not drink with meals, at least for now, but to drink fluids before or after meals. This may help reduce the rapid transit.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.
