My son Mitch 14 years old, has just had surgery 4th Feb 2008, to complete his j-pouch and closure of his loop ileostomy. He is now suffering with irritation of his peri-anal region. Seeking advise of the barrier creams that work to protect and heal region.

I recommend Ilex, Calmoseptine and Dermawheat.

Ilex is a skin protectant paste - it's great at night (for night time accidents) and it also helps to heal irritated skin. Calmoseptine stops the pain very quickly, calms irritated skin and also helps with the healing process. Dermawheat is good for very irritated skin and fissures. It's like a thin moisturiser - it doesn't stain (the others do a bit).

The Royal Children's Hospital (Wood Pharmacy) has Ilex. If you call them they will send it to you (about $17 plus $4 postage). Many chemists have Calmoseptine, but just ask them to order it if they don't. A few chemists and health shops stock Dermawheat.

Also, it's best not to use soap. I use Invite Dry Sensitive Skin Wash - the only product that doesn't sting me. Baby products are too harsh for me!

I hope you find something that works and I hope your son's problems are temporary. For most of us, the first couple of months are really bad, then things gradually improve.

Feel free to send me a private message if I can be of further help.

Nikki

Hi,

You might also want to post this question in the "General Question" or "Help need advise" section b/c you will get more responses and lots of helpful hints.

Also, if you use the "FIND" tab and search for "butt burn" (term used more commonly than peri anal irritation) you will also get TONS of response as butt burn is a major issue.

Hi,
Another good barrier cream is Burts Bees Diaper Cream (comes in a tube). This one worked the best for my hubby and we like it especially because it is all natural. (It also is great for super shiny fingernails if you get some on your hands but thats just a side benefit LOL).
Cheers!

I'll second the calmoseptine.. it worked well for my husband's issues with butt burn. He couldn't have survived without it!
