Do K-pouches usually have more dietary restrictions than permanent end ileostomies due to the catheter emptying?

I do, not sure about the others.
I ate anything with my loop ileo though I did get a blockage due to eating excessive amounts of fruit salad 2 times Frowner

I cannot do many raw veggies at all. Tomatoes and cukes (no seeds) I can do broccoli slaw.... thats about it. I really don't eat lettuce or any greens for that matter, even cooked spinach is a pain so I don't eat it. Can't do potato skins either. Raw fruits are easier but I still have to limit how much I eat in one day. No pineapple.
Sometimes its hard, but I love not having a bag so to me its worth it.

Boggie,
I've had my pouch for 32yrs and I discovered while dieting that if I seperated my fruits form my carbs (no fruit after carb meals, only on an empty stomach of 1/2hr before the meal) that I have tons less problems, I also seperate carbs and protiens so that my digestion works better...I have been eating salads, gratted carrots, all raw veggies (not stems and few or no skins) and most fruits other than pineapple or stringy mangos etc...forbidden veggies are usually all beans and peas (very gassy and can get blocked in the tube if you don't chew, chew, chew), corn but not popcorn, I eat tons, and the stalks of cellery, asperagus etc...but I do eat young leaves or stalks and only the tender parts of the asperagus...I even eat steamed leeks but again the young parts...it is hit and miss most of the time...you practice and try again and again until you get it right...I eat tons of nuts (sniff, sniff, sigh...gained 10lbs on them )...and scarf down litres of ice cream too...so it is up to you to train, your pouch and your eating habits.

Even for k-pouchers, diets differ. I can eat popcorn but I wouldn't eat a huge bag at the movies, just share a bag. I can eat baked beans but, after clearing my catheter once too often I avoid corn kernels. I don't eat greens, but mainly because I take Coumadin and greens affect my INR numbers. I can eat cold slaw and nuts in moderate amounts (just remember to chew). And, above all, I avoid mushrooms. I remember my surgeon at Cleveland, Dr. Fazio, said he had to clear more mushrooms from k-pouches than any other edible.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The whole time I had my ileo (end for 10 months, loop for 3), I was very conservative with my diet--no raw veggies, no fruit, no beans, etc, mainly to avoid gas and watery output. My pouch is not doing well, and I may be nearing the end of the line, just thinking about perm ileo vs. KP. If I thought I could have a more liberal diet than I followed with my temp ileo, and if it would be a dramatic difference in diet tolerance from a KP, then that would be a factor in my decision. Lots to consider. Thanks! Any more input is always welcome!

Boogie,
When a K pouch works, it works wonders...and is a true miracle...I loved mine for 20yrs...but when it doesn't work then it can be difficult to get strait answers and find a competent surgeon to do the fix up...make sure that if you do choose the k pouch then you are backed up by a great surgeon and a competent team that will follow through the long term...

Hi, I have a BCIR rather than a Kpouch, they both work using a catheter, yes some foods get clogged, chewing really well is the key, stick to medications that are non capsule, as I have had to dig those out, due to the rubber consistance they tend not to disolve. Over all, I eat almost anything, you just learn to avoid foods like mushrooms, corn, green peas. If you do eat these and chewe them to mush, they will come out thru the catheter. The best part is you con control your bathroom trips, even when there is gas, a gas x or pepto bismol tablet usually takes care of the issue until I am ready to go tothe bathroom. Good luck in your decision.

By the way, my hand blender has become my best friend...a lot of the food that I gave up eating due to fiber content or just because I am a lazy chewer has been reintroduced into my diet thanks to my hand blender...I can pop it into a pot of homemade soup (I leave it chunky for the family and then blend the rest for me), or into a mug of fruit and make myself a great smoothie...I get all of the vitimins without the fiber clogs...just one more way that we can always work our way around things (except maybe mushrooms!!!)

ps. you may find yourself lactose intollerant with a k pouch if you are not already with a J or and end ileo
