I am having my surgeries this summer (colon and probably everything south of it) and am currently looking for a surgeon I like, but I have questions regarding what happens later? One of the reasons I am leaning towards a continent ileostomy is that with j-pouches you have follow-up scopes on a regular basis and to put it bluntly - I am tired of having scopes up my rear! I have had MANY colonoscopies (FAP) and really never want another scope, enema, digital exam, etc. again! What is involved in the K-pouch/BCIR as far as follow-up once the initial surgery is done? What about after the pouch is healed?

There are only one set of footprints in the sand today - today, God is carrying me.

I was told that if I had no problems I was done.

Me too. I hadn't seen a surgeon since 1985 and just had a scope to see how it's holding up and all is wonderful.

This is why I wish more surgeons performed a continent ileostomy - especially for those that have to lose both colon and rectum.

I have a k-pouch and chrons and currently have scopes every 6 months because of the chrons. BUT having a scope through your stoma instead of your rear? Walk in the park. No enema, no embarrassment...
