Hello , My surgeon has mentioned that I may be able to get a kock pouch, currently have loop ileo and told my j-pouch is too much trouble* & so will have to be removed.
I would be grateful if anyone could tell me exactly what the operation for kock pouch being made involves, inc recovery time, wounds etc(as do not know much about it at all) and when j pouch removed as well - is it done in stages? Also, anything else anyone can tell me I would be really grateful. Am on 6mp too as suspected crohns. Thank you |

I had a loop ileo with j-pouch and in early November I had it all redone and turned into a koch pouch. The initial recovery was a bit more painful because all my previous surgeries were laproscopic and my last was done fully open. I had a midline incision and a open wound where my loop ilio was that closed up nicely. the wound where they removed my rectum was a little more tenacious but healed just the same.
Since I was already accustomed to having an ostomy 2 months out of the surgery I was eating what I wanted and am doing great now. if you have suspected crohns and you have a koch pouch done, you will always have to remember that if you do have crohns then the pouch may eventually have to be removed but there are many people who have crohns and a koch pouch and have no real problems. Hello KeithO , thank you so much for your reply
A couple more questions .... is the kock valve not in the same place as the ileo then? Also, is it usual for the kock pouch to be made out of the old j-pouch ? as didn't know that either. Thanks |

Some people have their koch pouch stomas in different locations but most often the new stoma is located a few inches lower than a conventional iliostomy. Mine is about 2 in below my old stoma which was about an 1 in down and 2 over from my belly button. Depending on your surgeon he probably will use part of your old j-pouch to form the new pouch but that also depends on the state of the existing pouch. If the j-pouch you have is your first then it won't cause any for the doctor to start from scratch.
good luck with everything! July 21, 2007 - Subtotal Colectomy w/ end Iliostomy----- November 30, 2007 - Proctolectomy with ilial-pouch-anal anastomosis and temp loop ilio---- November 11, 2008 - Failed j-pouch used to form a koch pouch |
