Well it's been almost a year since my last surgery. I have a new pouch and valve and everything has been great. Last week I went to start my lawn mower and I felt a tug or pop inside, the valve started leaking alittle gas and alittle later was leaking poop. I called my surgen. He said not to panic that it might be thst I tore some scar tissue and to get the cath in and tape it in for awhile. Well its been alittle over a week now, if I pull the cath out I don't seem to leak but I have a hell of a time getting it back in. So I got it back in this morning and it's taped in now waiting to heare from surgen, I guess the valve slipped,so I think maybe round 4 is coming up.Is all this worth it?

Hi...guess alot of bcirs' kpouchers are out and about not in the kkorner...so thought I'd go ahead and reply...
My slipped valve never leaked, I couldn't insert the cath and had to leave taped in until surgery. For me, I had so many probs with the adhesives and ulcerated skin so the bag just wouldn't adhere properly. It was hard on me mentally. Only you can decide if it is worth it. Alot of members thrive with the j, k/bcir and end ileo. I know you trust Dr Schiller. But, it may not hurt to get another opinion from a BCIR surgeon or Dr Worsey at Scripps while in CA. I had different surgeons do my valve repairs. All were trained by Dr Kock and my original surgeon, but techique still varies between surgeons I think. Best to you in your decision...it's difficult for sure. Proctocolectomy 1979; Kock Pouch 1980; valve repairs 1980/83/85; Cholecystectomy (gallbladder) 1987 |

Janice, thanks for the reply. I have a question for you, once your cath is through the muscle how hard do you have to push to get it through the valve? I normally don't have to push at all, but now it doesn't want to go unless I push pretty hard.Dr. just called and I'm going on the 11th for scope and maybe surgery.

Hi...I have a kpouch valve so not sure how a bcir valve works - it's completely different.
I just insert cath into my stoma and about 1 inch down is the valve so gently insert. Sometimes I have to angle it different though. I never have to push..if the valve feels like it's constricting - I just take out relube, relax and then insert. The 11th isn't too far away...hang in there. I used to have to wait two weeks for ins approval - it's a bummer! Proctocolectomy 1979; Kock Pouch 1980; valve repairs 1980/83/85; Cholecystectomy (gallbladder) 1987 |

I talked to Dr. Schiller again today, he thinks that I might have torn some scar tissue last weekend when I tried to pull start my lawn mower. I do remember feeling a tug or pop inside when I tried to start it, and was alittle sore after. That is when my problem started, so with any luck it won't be any big deal, I hope. Anyway will find out on tues.

Hi Dyna
Not all leaks are due to valve damage. You may have herniated a muscle around you stoma/ or pulled your pouch off the wall. I have had both and they both called intubation problems and leaks. Is there a buldge? is you stoma sticking its tounge out at you? both can be fixed with laporoscopy and do not need open surgery or long immobilisation. Just try to keep the tube taped in for now and do not panic. Is there pain? Is the leak heavy or mild? Sharon It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here.... |

With the cath taped in I have no pain and feel better than I have in along time. I may just keep it taped all the time. I fly out today for scope tomarrow and will find out then. I sleep through the night with the cath taped in, I have'nt done that in so long.

Janice, Sorry for taking so long to reply, my computer went south. Was scoped and found the entry to have 4 bends that were probably from torn scar tissue from trying to start lawn mower. Anyway Dr. said he didn't think it would fix itself so one more surgery, and he fixed the stoma as well.So far so good.
