I am going to begin my search for a potential K-pouch surgeon. I saw the list of surgeons, but if possible I would like a more personal opinion of the doctors people have used. I am in Rhode Island right now, so something local would be great...but not essential. I have no problem traveling to a surgeon if he is good. The plan is to take my OP reports to a few consults to see what results I get.
So... Anyone have any suggestions or testimonials? I appreciate any advice people could provide. Gabe ps - Where did the surgeon list go? Is it stickied? |

1. I highly recommend Dr Gregg Shore in St Pete. My son is his K pouch patient. He has 10 years experience and IMO is phenomenal. They also have a family suite for whoever travels with you.
Florida is a better place to be as far as weather when it isn't hurricane season-haha. Winter is difficult getting flights in and out. They are happy to answer questions. 1-888-825-1495-Fran is the nurse/admin. 2. Dr. Milsom and Bauer both in NY do not take insurance and are both good.NY is expensive for hotels, etc. 3.Dr Launer in CA is very experienced and still does many k pouches. 4. Dr Dietz in Ohio has not done many at all nor has Dr Remzi and they have been discouraging people to have then done now that Dr Fazio is no longer avaialable 5. Dr Dozios at Mayo in MN is in the best CR center in the country. |

Gabe, the surgeon list is still there...just click on the thread and scroll down..
The surgeon who did mine is no longer dong surgeries. If I were in Rhode Island I would head to NY and talk to Drs. Gorfine, Bauer and Milsom. It's been said they do not take insurance, but who knows what arrangements can be made...as I say "you don't know if you don't ask". You can also inquire about hotels that offer special rates (and sometimes AAA rates are lower). Sometimes you have to do your homework. I suggest starting in NY because of where you are and all three of the surgeons are highly skilled with Kocks. Check out the list...and call Cleveland Clinic. If your insurance is accepted by them a consult is worth the trip. Check out the list...the choice is yours Kock 1979; end ileo 2003; Kock 2006 |

As someone with direct experience with him, I would suggest Dr. Joel Bauer in NYC, who is associated with Mt. Sinai Medical Center/Hospital in New York City.
He is very experienced, easy to talk with, straight forward, and most importantly, in my opinion, an awesome surgeon. My case was complex, and he did great work. He has helped many people, including myself, and, as mentioned, has a great deal of experience with the Koch Pouch procedure, and also with several other types of IBD surgery, such as the J-Pouch and Ileostomies. Best of luck with your surgery...recovery from Koch Pouch surgery takes time, but is well worth it in regard to the great quality of life you can have after healing from what is a fairly major operation. Dr. Bauer would be a great choice. |

I had mine done by Dr. Stephen Gorfine (he is associated with Dr. Bauer) and operates out of Mt Sinai. He is great.
