Well I will be hearing from surgeon, Dr Lichliter here in Dallas, Texas if his collegue (Jacobson) will be attempting my jpouch and possibly BCIR as back up in the OR if the jpouch is not possible due to colon cancer/polyps.

So my questions are:

I do crossfit, high endurance work outs that involve a lot of box jumps, running, sprinting and weightlifting. Anywhere from 65 to 300 pound weight I deadlift or overhead lifts, pullups, etc.

With the BCIR are there restrictions on lifting heavy? Just trying to make decisions here still.

Also I had a gastric sleeve back in 2006. Anyone have weight loss surgery and have a BCIR or Jpouch? I have a hard time in general getting fluids and food down. Just wondering how other manage this.

Hi Vanessat,
First off I figure that you are reasonably young and in good shape, that is a major plus, next, with the gastric sleeve you are forced to eat small quantites and chew well...A plus for any k pouch type surgery...chewing is a biggie with k pouches because the stuff has to come out a tube and if it is not well chewed things get stuck and need to be plucked out...as for the exercise/sports question...
I lifted weights (powerlifting in Toronto in the 70's)...pre-k pouch but never went up to that level once I had the pouch...that said, if you keep your abs solid and wear a belt you should be ok...but beware, you Can Not do it immediately...you must allow the midline incision to heal first...anyone who has had this type of surgery is more prone to incisional hernias and normal hernias and from experience I can say that they are no fun at all...so you must work your way up slowly.
I never had one before my mid 40's after a series of surgeries that had me on bedrest for long periods of time so my abs became soft...
I hope that this helps and try to avoid kicks to the gut while you are at it...They are never helpful with a k pouch.
Sharon

It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here....

Cool! I had a tummy tuck with muscle repair in 2010 then a revision to it then I formed a desmoid tumor and had a 3rd mini tummy tuck. after the 3rd I was back at my box (gym) 2 weeks post op. With this I know there is more down time I just didn't know if you are restricted to how much weight you can lift. Questions for a surgeon I am sure but always nice to hear from real people Smiler

Vanessat,
I am not so sure how much your surgeon will know about post op sports other than to tell you to be careful and don't overdo it...like I said, a belt is essential and possibly a girdle (no joke) that supports the whole line with the belt over it...I run/climb stairs/hills daily and do about 10-20xs up 75stairs...it is hard work but I have been doing it since I was a kids...I can't run on flat surfaces so up&down gives me the workout that I need but I always wear gidle+belt to keep my abs supported...I do a yoga sort of deep breathing to reinforce my abs especially post op and slowly work up to real crunches etc...inspite of it all in 2007 6wks post op I started up on the stair master and litterally ripped the abs apart (major hernia with stoma protrusion..not fun)...so take it easy and do not become impatient with yourself...I know how important it is to you and how hard it is to sit on your butt post op...we want just one thing, to go back to our normal...but taking the extra couple of weeks off is well worth it...

I met a body builder who has the BCIR. He was so skinny from the jpouch and now is heathy and all muscle. Started working out 3 months after his surgery so that is inspiring. Hope to learn from him!
