Well, not a job yet...but, the story goes:
now that I know i'm feeling better, and up to doing more, i wanted to get back on track of getting into more of a career. I have been wanting to get into editing (film/video). I currently work parttime at a folk music school, and they are super supportive and flexible with my scheduling. So i decided to attempt to get an internship to jump start me. The good news is I just recieved word that I'll be interning at this commercial editing post production house here in Chicago (pretty big dawg here) which i'm super excited about. (it's even a PAID internship, a bonus considering i was expecting to have to work for free) It's two days a week for about 3-4 months. now, my excitement is giving way to apprehension as i begin to realize that i will be at these peoples beck and call for 8 full hours a day. (they made no bones about telling us point blank that half the day alone will be spend on 'client services' that is, fetching lunches, coffee, emptying garbage, and stocking fridges... good ol' gopher'ing. Whereas there's supposed to be lots of 'downtime' to go and observe client sessions, edit sessions, etc) BUT...we're entitled to a half hour lunch each day, and we're supposed to work in collab. with the other interns (bout 5 or 6) to rotate lunches so there is never a time where there are no interns available. We're also not to take lunches during the 'lunch rush' (something like 11-1 or something) Now, i know some of you have the good fortune to not have to intubate during work, or only taking 10-15 min to intubate. But (and i'm not posting this thread to complain about intubating time...) I am not so fortunate. It still routinely takes me 25-40 min to intubate (that is getting in the bathroom, setting up my supplies, and accounting for if my stoma decides to be stubborn that day) my dilemna is this: I will have to go without eating all day, for certain, given that I cannot eat and intubate at the same time, and i will undoubtedly spend my entire lunch in the bathroom... I will sorta be on a more strict schedule than my current job, in which i am sorta free to get up and go whenever the gas pains and gurgling begin to be too much for me. Now I will probably have to say at the beginning of the day "i'll take the early lunch today" etc, but who knows when i'll need to intubate? (some days i can go much longer than others) and how i should address this with the head person? I mean, they know i had cancer, but like i told my mom, having cancer does not automatically mean the removal of one of your organs and a new hole on your stomach. So....any help/suggestions? |

I had similar thoughts when I would be stuck in all day deposition. Unlike you it was a rather uncommon thing so on those days I could sort of just avoid eating. Not a luxury you have.
Since this will only be happening a couple days a week did you think of maybe just leaving the catheter taped in with a cork in it, then just uncork when you have to go. its not a great solution but it is convenient. Its what I do when I am at a concert or playing golf. |

eh, no i did not think of that. i've never done that.
how do you just leave it in and cork it? my catheter is about 18 inches long. how would you hide that? and i found that when i wore constant drainage (whether it was a mental thing or not) i couldn't move as easily or as quickly. PLUS...it smells. very obviously. even though theoretically it shouldn't (i mean, no output was exposed to air, but i guess...i dunno...the wetness around the stoma or something? but it wasn't just my imagination. my boyfriend confirmed it didn't smell to good. i would not only be self concious and unconfident, it'd be more of a pain in the butt then helpful. i think. i'm just curious how you do this? |

As opposed to having a "lunch" would you have the opportunity to "snack" during the day. With my job I don't necessarily get to sit and eat. I'm constantly up and down. I eat with constant movement. Also, think about which foods are the easiest for your body to handle and choose those foods to eat the first part of the day so that emptying at work should go better for you. Its not the most of comfortable things, but as a I said it is really convenient. I have the same catheter type as you. If you take a piece of catheter tubing and slide the catheter through a hole in the side of it it will act as a brace. then you just tape it down with a little gauze around it to collect any mucuous that may come out. then chop off any unnecessary length.
With regard to the corks I know I saw them on. http://www.continentostomystore.com/Merchant2/merchant....ategory_Code=Privacy it is just a little red stopper. And there is no smell. I believe that your stoma is a bit higher than mine, so that may be a problem. If you want I will have my fiance take some pics so you can see what i am talking about. |

(and les, yes, i think i'll see if i can just grab a snack or a drink throughout the day. which woudl be fine by me) |

Becca,
If you feel you need something for breakfast you might try experimenting with low residue diets - check out sites like this... http://www.gicare.com/pated/edtgs02.htm You mentioned your extended time in the bathroom - do you irrigate? For me, if I didn't irrigate I would be in there all day instead of 10min. Of course if I have eaten stuff that blocks the tube all bets are off. |
