I am considering having a revision of my k-pouch valve. My original surgery was done in 1981 and I had no problems until a year ago. I have had increasing gas leakage, urgency after eating, and one instance of stool leaking. I saw a surgeon last year experienced in k-pouches and he felt the valve would eventually need repairing. I would appreciate any feedback re. revisions of the valve, including results, sypmtoms prior to surgery, post-surgery,down time, etc. Thanks!

my son had 2 revisions
first one valve slipped and the repair was difficult due to adhesions done by Dr Fazio in Cleveland
he had complications post surgery, an ileus and hematoma(sp?)
he ended up in the hospital for 7 weeks total and was very weak after that
the problem was not resolved and he continued to have difficulty intubating at that point we located a great dr -Gregg Shore in St Petersburg,FL, much closer
a scope showed a bent valve(perhaps because the tube had been in 7 weeks?)
the dr planned a small 1 day procedure that turned into more, the pouch had come loose as disolving sutures did and never adhered and turned backwards away from the valve
the dr sewed the pouch, my son returned to college classes 4 days later and the tube stayed in with a clamp for 3 weeks
it took a few months to get back to a normal intubation route and schedule and all is well now
everyone is different and drs are too, they all have their own way of doing surgery
all outcomes are not the same even with the same dr as each patient has different circumstances
i agree with dmarie, better to be safe than sorry, what could be a minor repair now could turn into major if prolonged as with any injury or illness

Thank you dmarie and Holly. I think the resounding message in all of this is to take action sooner than later. You've given me much to think about.

I had my kpouch in 1980 and needed valve repaired in 1981, 1982 and 1983 from slippage. I do not generally exp. problems expect now have some erosion found during a pouch scope. I am not sure if this is causing any issues that will require another new valve. I have leakage only when I goof and put in my catheter with the wrong end. I am just new to this wonderful site and am also seeking kpouch long term members. My gastro dr is hoping it will heal? Thoughts?
