I have had a Kock for a long time and this is new to me. It is happening often. I just happen to be going to a (new) ET for something else on Tuesday, but thought I would get your thoughts.
I am a stomach sleeper. Every morning I am waking up with a pad that has more than enough blood on it and even through the day,I can touch the stoma with tissue and have bright red blood. Any ideas? Kock 1979; end ileo 2003; Kock 2006 |

I've had a K-pouch for years and my stoma will bleed once in a while. Sometimes when I pull the catheter out, one of those oval holes will catch on the stoma and cause it to bleed a bit. If you feel the bleeding is excessive, have your doctor take a look. Good luck!

Granulation??? Those little white cellular growths that develop around or over the stoma....sometimes looks like small grains of rice or a white vail over the stoma...I get them all the time and have to burn them with a silver nitrate stick to sort of cauterize them...they bleed like crazy especially after intubating...or if I wear tight pants or rub against something (bath flower to wash...burns the stoma and it just drips blood)..if that is what it is you just need to see your doctor and get him to cauterize it/them...stings a bit but that's all.
Good luck Sharon It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here.... |

In addition to Bodoni and Sharon (both possibilities), I have two erosions (all okay, just from 30 yrs wear and tear) about 1/2in into the stoma before the valve, and when they are irritated I have blood on my pad. But, I also see blood on my catheter. I need to be more concious about lubing.
In addition, when I have had to interbate more often from too much fiber, they sort of feel like they are stinging and my stoma feels sore. My valve is not attached to the pouch (I have no idea if it's supposed to be) and I know that the sides of the cath catch just like Bodoni mentioned. And, I just learned that my pouch goes left to right - but its positioned where it has not attached to anything. Blood is just from erosions or catching on sides. All reasonable ideas.
There is no blood on the cath when I tube.-intubate. I do not see white granulations. I do have something that is hanging from the base of the stoma that has grown, changing from white to red (back and forth). It does not hurt and it hasn't bled, but I want it looked at. This is a new ET, with a community wound center here. Chances are she has never seen a continent ostomy; but a stoma is a stoma. Kock 1979; end ileo 2003; Kock 2006 |
