I use a little bit of Desitin or Balmex (zinc oxide cream typically used for babies to protect against diaper rash)--just a little spread around the perimeter of the stoma, for me, totally prevents any irritation. If I don't use it, I do get a little irritation after a few days of not using it, but then it goes away as soon as I start using the Desitin or Balmex again.

Chris is having a problem at the moment since last surgery and stitches around the stoma, says it burns, he's tried everything, nystatin powder, ilex, calmoseptine, lidocaine, bacitracin, neosporin. what do you use to cover the stoma, he uses gauze and curity pads but i think that is irritating it under the circumstances.

There is a product called BARD...comes in little packets...Wipes - soaked with a liquid protector. Wash and dry the skin around your stoma then tear open the little packet and smear it around the stoma...let it dry before applying your pad and it provides a protective film barrier.
You can get these at Torbot.com or The Continent Ostomy Store.

To cover the stoma, I use women's light-days mini-pads; which can be cut in half and just use half of one, or if you have a lot of "wetness" you can use more than one whole one (maybe 2 to 3 of them) stuck side-by-side together (the adhesive on the back can fasten them side by side together to make one very large pad). After surgery, the stoma temporarily was "wetter" and then I temporarily used cut-up squares I made from baby's disposable diapers, which was even more absorbent. These types of products are thin but absorbant and I use them because they are particularly designed to wick the moisture away from the skin, and they are relatively cheap and available in any store. I wear relatively tight underwear that keeps them in place without need for tape (and, anyhow, the mini-pads have light adhesive on the outside to stick them in place against the underwear).
