I've had my bcir for about 2yrs. I have never had real stinky output until my last valve revision, now it smells really bad and air freshner doesn't help much. Does this mean anything? Why all of a sudden does it smell so bad?. I'm using Devron and it helps some. Just wondering if this means anything?

Bacterial overgrowth? Too much sugar? Gastro? New food group? Any of the above may be the culprit or even a new food combination. So mixes just don't mix well... I find that eating orange rind really 'sweetens' things up...you can boil it first and add sugar (like orange jam) and chew on it..the natural oils really alter the nasty smell. (works with lemon and grapefruit rind too) Sharon It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here....

I would try a probiotic, and this could be pouchitis. It could be your diet. Were you on an antibiotic recently? That would have killed even the good bacteria in you intestional tract. Yogurt and probiotics are good for this. Certain foods do have more odor than others. Is your output thin and watery? That's a sign of pouchitis along with odor. You might want to clean out your pouch with water too. I find green leafy vegetables like lettuce help. You can burn a candle in the bathroom, this helps too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Always remember....After the storm there's a beautiful rainbow. 1977, September a Brooke Ileostomy (allergic to adhesives); 1978, May a Kock Pouch

Thanks for your replies. I've been off of pain meds for about 2 weeks and everything seemed to be fine other than cramps and spazums and the stink. I tried cypro for a few days and everything seems to be better, so maybe I've had pouchitis all this time.

Take a probiotic a couple of hours from the Cipro. If you have any muscle or tendon problems, ankles, legs, hips, etc.; it could be the Cipro. I can't take Cipro because it made my knees to my hips tighten up and I could hardly walk. Cipro can rupture a tendon, usually in the foot to ankle area. I hope it works for you, I just wanted you to know the side effects that could happen. It does sound like you had pouchitis. Now you need to get your good bacteria levels back up. That's what the probiotics are for, as antibiotics kill the bad and good bacteria in your digestive system. I hope you feel better soon. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Always remember....After the storm there's a beautiful rainbow. 1977, September a Brooke Ileostomy (allergic to adhesives); 1978, May a Kock Pouch
