Hi Kenny,
I do not know about the Bcir but the k pouch is done on a very limited basis by 1 or 2 surgeons...the only problem is that one of them seems to have a very high failure rate for the moment and I wouldn't reccomend him...are you looking in the public or private sector? NHsystem seems to limit you somewhat on who you can choose and when but if you are going private you may have a larger choice...if not maybe we could organize a group surgery in England or France by one of the North American surgeons?

It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here....

Please PM me Kenny,
I will not say anything against any doc on this site...it is just not polite...that said I know of 4 out of 5 k pouch patients from this surgeon who have had major problems and little of no resolution...so you may wish to look up old posts here under the heading of 'going back to the bag'...Experience is a biggie with the K pouch surgeons and so is humanity...you need a surgeon who has both and is willing to communicate directly with you if there are any problems and to resolve them quickly and not allow you to suffer uselesly...the first thing that you must do when meeting with a surgeon is to make sure that he/she will be there for you and that his team both admire and respect him and are not afraid of him (comments like, 'I wouldn't bother him/her with that, he/she is too busy to speak with a patient etc) are not good signs...
I know that the British like the French system have developed a system of surgeon as God and they are untouchables especially the professors...they look down on patients and dehumanise them so beware and make sure that you really like your surgeon.

Hi. I live in the UK and have a Koch Pouch, although I had it performed in Germany (ex hubby was in the army). I haven't had any problems (touch wood!) in 10 years so havent had to see anyone, but have to have a hystorectomy sometime this year. Would be interested to hear about the surgeon who is not very reliable as I think I am going need someone who knows about the k pouch at the op and certainly dont want anyone like that!

There are two BCIR ostomy centers in the states, St. Petersburg FL and Culver City Ca. I have been to both and can tell you my thoughts on both places. I am pretty positive those are the only two locations in the world...but I coudl be wrong on this. Unfortunately all the persons with Kpouches I've met or talked to weren't happy and a few went to bCIR or were forced back to a permanent illeostomy. It is my understanding Kpouches have a higher complication rate than Jpouches or BCIR's. I think it is totally worth it to travel here to get it done. I can almost guarantee you won't regret it. Even thsoe BCIR patients who had some complications, they were nothing compared to the Jpouch or kpouch complications, or having a permanent ileostomy.

Please PM me if there is anything else I can answer for you. Also check my profile, that might help you too.
