I had my j-pouch converted to a K-pouch at the end of October. Since then I've had a very difficult time managing gas. It literally rumbles and rolls through my whole abdomen, I can see it and hear it and it's very uncomfortable.

It doesn't seem to be food related as the same thing happens with plain toast as a larger meal. The gas also comes even on an empty stomach. I've tried Beano and GasX, neither do anything at all. I've been taking probiotics but think I should experiment with some others.

Does anyone have any suggestions on probiotics that have helped relieve some gas? Any other suggestions on what to do?

Dr. Launer said gas is normal as the pouch stretches and gets used to it's new function. I don't expect it to go away completely but it's so debilitating at this point that I need some relief, especially if this could last up to a year post surgery. Any thoughts would be great.

Hi Allison..gas pain is nothing fun.

I wonder if you should try bentyl or something for cramping while you are adjusting. It doesn't cure gas, but may make it more tolerable.

This mayo clinic list is really good. I've used pepperment tea for years and it soothes.

I also think you should follow up with a GI dr. If the gas is not related to food, they may want to do an upper endoscopy to see if your tummy is ok.

In the meantime, I would avoid dairy - it's very hard to digest. The gas can be from something you ate the day before. A good nutritionist told me to always avoid dairy and gluten (but THAT was to difficult for me). I do try to eat more rice. Rice really is soothing I found and easy to digest.

You've have had alot of medication in the last few mos, the cipro alone can cause problems afterwards. My new surgeon likes the Activia. But, I haven't tried it yet.
