Hi...it's important to find a GI dr and surgeon who are experts in the continent ostomy. There seems to be actually less pouchitis in a kock pouch then a jpouch. And, if you do get it - it seems to get under control and not persist with a round of antibiotics. The valve failures are at 10%. This is minor and in my opinion just as low as a failed jpouch. And, a slipped valve is very fixable. My kock pouch causes me less problems then with my brooke ileo. I am at almost 30 yrs. Keep doing your research, it's important to find the type of ostomy that suits you and your lifestyle. But, there are still choices!
Proctocolectomy 1979; Kock Pouch 1980; valve repairs 1980/83/85; Cholecystectomy (gallbladder) 1987

I had failed j-pouch. Had it converted to BCIR, I had some problems but would do it as many times as it took to keep it.

people seem to be very happy with the decision. i had my bcir in may and have had chronic pouchitus and cant eat like i used to and have been on antibiotics since. so still waiting to see if it will be better. i had an illiostomy since 1980 with no problems until the last few years so took a chance. for some reason my side seems mutilated to me but found no one that had this problem. all uneveness with protruding buldge. good luck with whatever you decide.
