Ok long post. Well I've been out from last surgery about 7 months now, and everything is great with new pouch and valve. I've been to my local ER 6 times for haveing ZERO energy and cramps, and dizziness. Every Doc. so far has said that the blood work shows Dehydration. I have low sodium and potassium. This time the ER Doc. says NO I'm not dehydrated, but that I am Hyponatremia, That I'm drinking too much water and washing the sodium and others out of my body. I normally drink 2 quarts water,2-3 glasses of cranberry juice,1 glass orange juice, and maybe a coke. How much does everyone else drink? anyone else have this problem?

You may be drinking too many liquids and water. Cut back and see how it goes.
Bananas are a good source of potassium. Keep us posted. |

That does seem like alot of liquids. I don't overdue water because without the colon it is flushing out our minerals. Be sure to drink water that has minerals added back in.
Why so much cranberry juice? Do you need it for bladder? One glass a day seems better along with one glass OJ. Apple juice is also packed with potassium too. It's difficult to find a good balance. I would reduce water but add an electrolyte drink into the water you do drink. I wouldn't exceed a total of 8 - 10 glasses a day total and see how you do. Also, have you had your b12 levels checked lately? Lack of this can cause same symptoms. Proctocolectomy 1979; Kock Pouch 1980; valve repairs 1980/83/85; Cholecystectomy (gallbladder) 1987 |

SALT
While at the Cleveland Clinic for dehydration due to a Crohn's flare, I was told to drink non-sugary liquids and to eat as much salt as I could tolerate. Unless you have another health condition that precludes salt, try it. A couple of months ago at my local hospital I was there again for dehydration (they found I had guardia, a parasite, ugh). Along with a couple of bags of saline, the emergency room doctor's advice? Potato chips and ginger ale. Potato has potassium too plus, of course, salt. |

I have just started to eat a banana every day and an orange and an apple with a alittle salt. My potassium seems to be ok now but my sodium is still low. I eat alot of differnt things that are high in sodium but it hasn't helped.I think I'm going to try to find some salt tablets at a sporting goods store.

Bananas clog my catheter...unless I do smoothies.
I do like baked potatoes..packed with potassium. They sell at Wendy's now for about $1.. Salt is a great idea. I like natural sea salt. I also like saltine crackers! I have high blood pressure so like the natural sea salt as it has minerals too. Proctocolectomy 1979; Kock Pouch 1980; valve repairs 1980/83/85; Cholecystectomy (gallbladder) 1987 |

Try an electrolyte replacement product like Propel or Vitalyte. See if that helps. Since you've been told you have hyponatremia that seems to indicate that you may still be dehydrated (in my sense of things) since you're not getting the benefit of the hydration and washing valuable minerals away.
I drink relatively little during the day. I drink when I'm thirsty. But I do use Vitalyte with my bubbly water. And of course I need my morning cappuccino. kathy *********************************************************** Lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it's been..... Grateful Dead |

I have been drinking Vitalyte off and on but doesn't seem to help much at all. Maybe because too much water.
