Have any folks with k pouches taken cipro or flagyl for pouchitis? which works best? why?side effects?
I think it is probably different than us j pouchers so I would like to hear from those with experience to help me deal with Chris.
Also, do you take probiotics? Which one and why?

Why would you think it would be different than with a j-pouch? It is the same ileal tissue...

I also believe that it is pretty individual regarding which works best and the side effects would be the same as for the j-pouch. I know that pouchitis is just as common, if not more, with the k-pouch than the j-pouch.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what the responses are.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

I've taken Flagyl one time I had pouchitis. It worked for me. Upset my system (crampy) at the beginning but it settled it down.

I do not take probiotics.Never have.

Just like any condition....everyone will react differently to medications. Sometimes it's a trial and error kind of thing.

I have taken Cipro for pouchitis with my K-pouch. 1500 mgs per day for first 3 days...then 1000 mgs per day for 10 days or so...then 500 mgs per day for a few days at the end. Some take 250 mgs for a week or so if they are really into tapering.

Flagyl always gave me bad side-effects.

I have taken Culturelle in the mornings and DanActive in the evenings and have not had any pouchitis for over a year and a half.

For me, pouchitis is like having the flu, lower back pain, nausea, diarhea; just feel sick and achy. I believe Cipro is for one strain and Flagl is for another. So if one doesn't work, you would need to try the other one if you aren't put on both right away. The meds would affect everyone differently and so would pouchitis.

I believe there is less pouchitis with the kock pouch. I think it's because there is no rectal cuff for the UC to linger in and we irrigate the pouch out.

I take acidophilus, it's cheap and it works for me. I don't take it all the time, if I start to feel crampy or not feeling so well; then I will take it 3 times a day.
