Chris continues to lose weight. He is so thin and can't afford to lose more.
Dairy is no good and neither is starch or sugar, what's left?
he needs some ideas of what k pouchers eat to gain weight.

Does Chris lose weight because of something in connection with the K-pouch, even when it is functioning o.k.? I know of a lot of K-pouchers who are overweight; and being too overweight can cause problems for the K-pouch valve (according to my understanding). I never had the problem of losing weight with my K-pouch and actually I struggle to keep my weight down within a good normal range, and I always have. Until now, I haven't heard of a problem in becoming too thin due to the K-pouch. What is the mechanism supposedly causing Chris to keep losing weight?

No appetite!
He was only 140 before he got UC, at his worse time he went down to 108, he was holding at about 128 for a few months and after this last surgery he's lost 6 lbs.
We think he needs to eat at McD or BK for a month!

I'll be watching this thread. In just 1 week of getting out of the hospital, I went from 147 to 132 and I'm trying my hardest to put any weight back on.

The only hard part is that my Dr. has put me on a restricted diet of meat and pureed vegetables/mashed potatoes (I hate pureed vegetables). At least till he reverses the temp ileostomy.

I'm no fan of ever taking any unnecessary drugs if drugs can possibly be avoided. But if the situation is potentially serious....I'm wondering, aren't there some sorts of drugs that markedly increase appetite? Is that a possibility, if appetite is the problem? Maybe just temporarily, and then he might get accustomed to eating more, and be able to stop the drugs? Or.....once when I was in the hospital, my roommate was a girl with anorexia, and they would "force" her to drink a few gulps of vegetable oil a couple of times per day --I guess for the concentrated calories. Certainly not appetizing, but if weight gaining is really seriously needed, it might not be THAT bad to kind of just have him hold his nose and take a few gulps of a mild tasting vegetable oil a couple of times per day --- ???? Not really great solutions, but they are the ideas that come to my mind.

I took periactin to gain weight for 3 months. Gained 25 lbs and was able to stop. He refuses. Does not like the dry mouth, says it makes him feel bad. He's not an easy one to deal with. Are any kids? LOL
Thanks for the suggestion, I will mention it to him. That's all I can do. Eating at Burger King for a month is doable!

I took Ramron, to help me gain weight and sleep. I got up to 145 while taking Ramron and I was 155 before I got sick. I'll be starting it again soon.

Forget the drugs and "artificial stuff". There are lots of healthy "high calorie" foods that he can actually enjoy eating.
Try Halva and Theina, both sesame seed derivatives..high in calories and pleasure. Choclate, even dark is very good and surprisingly enough, whole grain cakes, cookies and breads do wonders a long as there are no big seeds or raisins. Lots of really good soya based protien bars as well that taste really good. Worse case senario, get a veggie juicer, juice every type of fruit and veggie that he likes, add raw eggs, liquid lecitin and whey powder or protien powder and let him enjoy some really healthy, tasty shakes.
I had a few "skinny" years but that is long over...cooked milk products such as home made flans and quiches with cream pass very well through a pouch..it is fresh milk & cheeses that don't work and cause gas, pain and bubbly stuff.
It works for me every time, and much too well I may add. Smiler

Don't know if Chris cannot eat starch, sugar or dairy or just doesn't like them.

But bananas (spread with peanut butter if he likes it), avocado in a dip or any way, sweet potatoes with butter or butter substitute, apple pie with splenda, a bowl of cereal (maybe rice type if he can't eat wheat) with soy milk if he can't tolerate cow milk, fruit smoothies made with splenda, bagel with real or fake cream cheese and lox, salmon. If I could rhyme these foods, I'd add a stanza to "These are a few of my favorite things."
A trick for gaining or at least maintaining weight is to eat 5 rather than 3 times a day. If I skip snacks for a few days because I'm too busy, I lose a pound or two and so step up the snacks. If Chris likes coffee, a stop at Starbucks can easily add 400 calories.

With the holidays approaching I hope Chris can enjoy some goodies that our weight-watching friends can not eat.

As we all know we all have different tolerances. Chris can't handle any dairy, eggs or soy products, perhaps allergies but when he worked at starbucks he loved the drinks with milk or soy and suffered from drinking them so that stopped.
he eats guacamole when i make it but he gets burned out on it.
he never liked any fruits.
he eats breads and crackers and bananas, hates peanut butter. he eats frozen yogurt, chocolate. splenda is a no way! that runs right through the tube and he does not want to have to intubate that frequently especially so soon after surgery.
He is doing the mc donalds burger king stop on the way home, hopefully after exams with a month off he will put it back on.
he eats, just doesn't gain. like me.
it's our metabolism.the genes.
Sharon
the cooked quiche, cooked milk products are actually worse with him.
I have a juicer, we tried whey protein and that made him bloated and not want any food.
I will get him some dark chocolate tomorrow, i think that causes liquid output too though.

Salmon is very healthy, tasty, fattening, and easy to digest! If the hospital salmon doesn't do it, you could always go to a place like Outback or a Fresh Fish House and treat him to a nice, delicious piece of salmon.

You could also add olive oil to foods, to make it more fattening.

Just send him to stay with me for a while! I'll put the fat back on him...I seem to do it to everyone, whether I try to or not! Big Grin
Some nice french sauces??????Goat's milk and Sheep's milk cheese work wonders on babies with lactose intollerace, they use them constantly here..if you can get some good ones they are worth a try...I live off of them here (might explain the weight gain!!!)
Keep hanging in there

Will Chris eat oatmeal?
There are so many flavors of the instant oatmeals that taste really yummy..
I eat oatmeal often for breakfast..it doesn't bind me.
When I was pregnant and not gaining weight I made protein shakes...I know this sounds yucky but I would put a raw egg in the blender with banana, milk, strawberries....you could use the frozen yogurt..possibilities are endless Big Grin

What about bake potato loaded with toppings?

I'm really doing a job on the package of pinwheel cookies...probably look better on him than me Big Grin Big Grin
