hi, if your skin is sensitive to tapes/adhesives from the ostomy wafers.... could it also be sensitive to the AMPatches or pads used to cover up the Kock pouch stoma? Do any K-pouchers have a sensitivity to those too?

thanks.

Any and all adhesives eventually turn my skin red and itchy. Steri-strips leave welts and ampatches give me diaper rash if I don't change them as soon as I get damp.
My trick is to stick a folded up kleenex into them to absorb the extra moisture and then change the kleenex often and keep the patch for longer.
I have yet to find a cream, lotion or skin barrier that works on me for more than a short period of time.

If I use anything BUT the AMpatches, my skin gets irritated quickly.
I also insert a TEFLA pad into the AMpatch. This is non-stick, which Dr. Fazio recommends. He said regular pads can cause an inflammation of the stoma.

I use menstral pads (overnight size cut in half) that have a "dri weave cover" with paper tape to place over my stoma. I also use EPC skin protectant cream around the stoma daily (for me works better then any other diaper rash guard I've tested). I shave where I stick the tape since it will pull removing sometimes. I've done this for years and have no problems unless I leave the pad on way too long lots of days in a row- but clears up right away again once I get back to changing regularly and applying faithfully.

oh, I didn't mean to say I leave the same pad on lots of days in a row, meant, say on vacation where I can't get to bathrooms, I leave a pad on for too many hours, but change it, but leave another one again too many hours for several days in a row.

I use the menstrual pads too, but the ultra thin ones (no sense having anything other than natural "padding" on my lower belly!). I cut them into thirds and change them after I intubate, about 5 times a day.

Since the pads have a sticky side, they stay in place in my underwear without any tape. I admit that once in a while I don't put the pad exactly over my stoma and then get moisture on my underwear, but that's about as far as it goes. And it happens so seldom that avoiding any tape is both convenient and avoids irritation.

I got this idea from this site -- that's one reason this site is so helpful.

yes, only the ultra thin ones. All other but "dri weave cover" give me rash. using the sticky side to underpants is great - I just have too much mucous and need a real tight cover. This site rocks!

since last summer, when I had a very nice rash, I have started using Calmoseptine (one of j-pouch sponsors)when I know trips to the bathroom will be infrequent, when it is incredibly hot out (summers in south Florida) and when I go to the gym.
I spread a small amount around the skin surrounding the stoma, place my pad (I use nursing pads) and I'm off and running!
It is the best. I have not had a rash since Smiler

I use pads as well, ultra thin. I cut em up really small (i can get maybe 10 patches outta one pad) i cut em into like, 1 1/2 in x 1 1/2 in squares.
My stoma really only produces alot of mucous just after i take the catheter out, and alot of times, when i take the catheter out i let the stoma kinda just air out and breath while i clean up and put the supplies away etc (usually this is just at home, though sometimes when i'm in a public stall). and so i can tissue off the stoma drool and when i put the little pad on it is just enough. and it barely causes any noticeable signs when wearing any shirts or whatever. I attach it with paper tape. AMpatches will rip my skin up, as will most every 'bandaid' type bandage. Specially if i wear them more than one in a row. i must have really sensitive skin there. it's been almost two years, i woulda thought it'd toughen up by now. guess not.

anywho, i can't just stick it to my underwear cuz my underwear doesn't come close to my stoma. way too low. though sometimes when i don't feel like wearing tape, or trying to give my skin a break, i wear a tube top around my waist, and stick the pad to that. but since it's kinda annoying to me after awhile, i usually only do that for a day or so

(like when i came back from mexico, the skin around the stoma was all red and irritated b/c i was wearing waterproof bandages, and the sun, and all that. So for a couple days i just wore the tube top. But i never wear it at night. i guess i move around too much so i always end up with it twisted around me)
