My valve/stoma has been a bit sore since the begining due to all the hell that it has been through and I do have occasional problems with intubation when the pouch is overfull or if I manage to sleep through the night(not often)...I use tons of lube but still have occasional problems..but now it just Hurts. It feels like it wants to pop out...I cannot feel another hernia and there is no prolapse visible so I don't think that it is that...It is just painful to intubate and akward...I am not lifting or overdoing it..very mild pilates/yoga/deep breathing stuff and very little running around due to a sore ankle so it can't be that...
The stoma also feels really 'dry' lately, the tube has a lot of drag on it inspite of all of the lube. Any ideas? or suggestions? Sharon It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here.... |

I don't have any suggestions for you, I just wanted to say I'm sorry that you're experiencing so much difficulty. I hope someone comes along with some helpful advice.

Could this be pouchitis?? I haven't had any in over 15 yrs (ok, fine..I am not bragging ) and do not remember what exactly it was like...but dried out valve, difficulty intubating, pressure, pain and the feeling that the pouch is trying to push itself out???

Sharon. Also sorry you are having problems. You certainly have had more than your share. I recently had pain and tried a course of Cipro and it seemed to clear up. correlation or causation?? I do find if I get dehydrated that this affects problems with intubation, catheter sticking even with lube. Hang in there.

sharon....it's normal to go through periods of a dry interbation requiring extra lube. Just like it's normal to have alot of extra mucous off and on. I've never been able to make rhyme or reason of it. I do found that medication I take that can cause dry mouth will also sometimes cause my stoma to produce less mucous.
The stoma will get sore from being very tight and dry when inserting and removing - especially when dry or if you need to do often. If it's sore every day and dry every day, I'd get it looked at. But, intermittent has been normal for me. This message has been edited. Last edited by: JaniceM, Proctocolectomy 1979; Kock Pouch 1980; valve repairs 1980/83/85; Cholecystectomy (gallbladder) 1987 |

Thanks Janice,
I am definetly taking tons of anti-inflamatories for tendonitis etc and muscle relaxants for the same...plus tons of vits etc..could it be that??? I do have some 'good days' when I intubate less and thus have less discomfort...am a bit shaken up when it does happen because I never had this before (and I never used lube before 2005!) Can the onset of menopause be part of all of this??? Am drying out elsewhere too Sharon It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here.... |
