So, looks like I'll be on antibiotics for a while to help with this pesky pouchitis that doesn't want to go away, but my hubby and I would like to start a family. So I ask my doc about antibiotics and pregnancy. He says there aren't any safe antibiotics to be on if I were to get pregnant and in fact some can act as an abortion!?!?!?

Please tell me that there are safe antibiotics out there for pregnancy and that I just need a second opinion...

p.s. I'm allergic to augmentine and sulfa drugs.

A lot of drs go with mo drug is safe because that is the safest course. But it isn't reality in a lot of pregnancies. There are some safe drugs, with varying degrees of efficacy for pouchitis. Amoxicillian is generally safe, I believe flagyl is safe after 1st trimester, and there are some others. I recommend finding a high risk ob to consult prior to getting pregnant to discuss your options. He or she will beich more familiar with the realities of drugs in pregnancy. A lot of drugs are in the gray area and it will come down to balancing the risk against benefit to the mother.

Hi armywife,
I got pouchitis twice during my pregnancy and was just put on to a lower dose of flagyl,it took longer for the pouchitis to clear up then if i'd been on the normal dose, but other then that it was fine to take,i had no problems.

Don't worry!

As I'm sure you've seen from my PM, I just had a consult with my OB, and she said that there are many women who are an antibiotics for the duration of pregnancy for tons of different reasons. Amoxicillin and Flagyl (not ok in 1st trimester) are class "B" drugs, which means they are one of the safest drugs you can take during pregnacny.

And my OB even RECOMMENDED being on a low dose of them if I get pregnant even if I'm not having a bought of pouchitis. She said that if I'm prone to it and have chronic issues that it's likely to flare during pregnancy.

I'm really curious to know your doctors thoughts however. Maybe he was referring to the specific antibiotics that you're taking now?

Definitely talk to your OB to get things straightened out. They know for sure what drugs are safe and not safe to take.

Sorry to hear about the negative appointment :-(
