Ok.. So I just had my retrieval and transfer within the last week. A little background - I am 34, healthy and went the IVF route because of blocked tubes and endometriosis. So, they retrieved 10 eggs, and 7 were viable, and only 1 fertilized! I never was informed or even considered that low fertilization would be an issue, as our situation didn't indicate it on the surface. So, we transferred the only 1, which was 6 cell, grade 4 on day 3 - which apparently is not good in terms of implantation success. So, a few questions out to the group - has this ever happened to anyone on this forum - surprising low fertilization and what was the outcome? How many of you have transferred only 1 and been successful? Is it common that ICSI isn't discussed with the patient, until AFTER we know there is an issue? I am so discouraged and worried about the outcome - Any information and/or success stories welcome!
There's really never any guarantee with # of eggs you will produce. once you get to the mid-30s, it's just not that many, and 10 sounds about right to me. I was 39 when we did it and they only got 6, 4 were viable to be fertilized and 3 successfully made it to the day 3 window. But it could have just as easily have been none, or 1. If we had only gotten 1, we would have gone ahead because we could only afford to do it 1 time.
Are you on progesterone injections to help make the embryo stick?
Yes, I am on progesterone injections once daily. Those began the day of my retrieval.
I hear you on the cost.. I see you are in Cleveland so I assume the cost is similar. Ours was $6300 for the RE and another estimated $1800 for lab fees. Apparently, ICSI (where they inject the sperm directly into the egg) was another $2000-I wish I would have opted for that as if we do another cycle, it will be closer to $10K. Luckily though meds were paid fully by insurance.
What was the cell count/grade of the embryos you transferred??
My first IVF cycle we got 10 eggs, 8 fertilized and three were considered strong enough to transfer. We transferred the two strongest. We believe I did get pregnant with twins because my hormone levels were off the charts but by the time of my 6 week ultrasound there was only one fetus - he's now 4 1/2!
I did a frozen transfer with the remaining embryo and got pregnant but miscarried early.
Second fresh cycle we also got ten eggs but four embryos. We took them to blast and transferred one on day six - she is now two!
There was recently a study done that showed pregnancy rates were almost equal when transferring one embryo or more so don't panic. It can happen. Hang in there the 2ww us the worst part of the whole process.

I was 30 when we did IVF I had two children already and was told at time of pouch surgery that infertility would not b a problem Anyway we did one round and retrieved 13 eggs and 12 fertilized We implanted 3 as the dr told me we had better odds of winning the mega lottery than all three eggs taking Well the triplets are now 10 and it was a rough pregnancy I do not recommend implanting more than 1 unless you know you have implantation issues We froze the rest of the eggs and after a one year decided 5 children was all we could handle so we donated the rest to two women. Our eggs used the ICSI method and were grown out i believe 5 days instead of 3. Hope this helps
