My husband & I want to get pregnant and plan to start trying soon. I am currently on a low dose of cipro for pouchitis which started in 2002 (undiagnosed for awhile and was bad, but I'm totally fine now).

I have gone off the cipro back & forth but have not had a lot of success going off it totally. However, I realize I have to go off it if I want to get pregnant. What should I do? Is there a way to wean off cipro rather than stopping cold turkey? Can I still take probiotics to help keep my digestion good, if trying to get pregnant?

Please does anyone have advice or experience to share?
Thanks.

Talk to your doctor about safer options while you are trying to get pregnant and for the first three months. Ihave read on these posts that Cipro is a definet no during pregnancy but some are able to take Flagyl after the first three months.

My docs had me switch from Cipro to Amoxicillin as I generally have to stay on some sort of maintenance antibiotic for pouchitis, and it's supposed to be safe(er) during pregnancy. Not quite as effective as the Cipro was, but seems to be doing the job so far. There are seveal antibiotics that are Class B which means they are generally considered safe during pregnancy. Definately talk to your docs as it is something that can be managed.

Thank you both so much for responding. I have an appointment next week with both my ob/gyn and my GI guy and will ask lots of questions.

Do either of you (or anyone else) know if VSL is safe/good to take while trying to get pregnant?
