Hello,
I just began a natural cycle Frozen Embryo Transfer IVF cycle this week. Over the weekend I experienced what seemed to me to be pouchitis symptoms( i have never had pouchistis before). My GI surgeon prescribed cipro and right after the first dose or 2 I felt much better and all of my symptoms have gone away. My surgeon says that she is not sure if it is pouchitis or something else and would like me to hold my IVF procedure. She wants to see how I do without antibiotics and do a flex sig in a couple weeks to see how things look on the inside. We have been planning this cycle for a while and since i feel so much better I am just so conflicted with what to do?? Has anyone out there had a similar situation or can anyone offer me any advice?

How long have you had your pouch? If you've had it for awhile and the Cipro worked, sounds like a case of pouchitis that has now been treated. I think it's pretty common for surgeons to want to do a flex sig after your first case of pouchitis to do a biopsy to confirm that is what it is (they did for me). I have chronic pouchitis and made sure that mine was well controlled before becoming pregnant. I still take meds for it every day. But if you're not a new poucher, seems unlikley that you have to worry about chronic pouchitis. Even if you have recurrent pouchitis during pregnancy, there are safe antibiotics you can take. My advice would be to talk with your doctor first and see what his other concerns are.

JusT be aware that cipro is a class C drug and not considered safe for pregnant women (they have no data on what effect it might have on a fetus) You should discuss w your doctor what meds would be safe and factor that into your decision. BTW - in spite of the above there may be cases where a dr decides to use a class c drug because the benefit to the mother is great enough to be worth the risk. Part of your decision needs to be how you feel about such a trade off...
