I wanna ask you something? Is there a relation between anal fistula and sex? What are the reasons of a fistula? Does sex make a fistula to occur. I now unfortunately have fissures for 8 months. It didn't heal altough I had botox shots..3 years ago I had pouchitist..but I was healed..I also have spondilitis..Now it comes to my mind, will I have a fistula in the future..Because I had all of the possible complications of this operation..I am really curios about if there is a relation between anal fistula and sex..and why people have fistulas? I will be so glad if one of you answer my questions..
thanks...

To my knowledge, anal fistula is not related to normal vaginal intercourse. It is caused by the surgical trauma or ongoing inflammation in the area. Anal fistulas are generally associated with perianal abscesses that arise in the tissues surrounding the anus/rectum. Active IBD can predispose you to fistulas, particularly Crohn's. Even recto-vaginal fistulas are not related to vaginal sexual intercourse. It is the proximity of the two structures that make it possible for the fistulas to form. However, anal intercourse is another story. If you engage in that, you are putting yourself at risk because of the trauma to the area.

Spondylitis should have no effect on this either.

Jan I wanna thank you for the information..I do not engage in anal intercourse..and I will never..But so many women have complains about vaginal fistulas and I am curious about if it is related with sex or using tampons..Is vagina really sensitive? I do not know really..And I thought that everyone with this operations will have the complications successively. I told you before I had pouchitis, I was diaognised with spondilitis and now I have unhealed fissures..And I think the next one is anal or vaginal fistulas..That's why I ask the question why an anal fistula or vaginal fistula occurs..Are they related with sex?
thanks for the answers Smiler

I had my rec/vag fistula and sex or tampons were not in the picture. Like Jan said, it was probably due to the trama of having surgery in and around that area. I've since been told that with my graciloplasty (what they did to repair the fistula) there is no way I can cause it to open again by engaging in intercourse. If having sex could cause it to open again than what they did to fix it wouldn't really be a good solution because I wouldn't be able to enjoy a normal, healthy life that included sex. I have never been told or heard that a fistula could be caused by sex. Don't worry about something that hasn't happened yet (easier said than done, I know). You may never get one.

Exactly. Just because you do have complications, it does not mean that you are likely to have ALL the complications. By the way, spondylitis is not a complication of this surgery, it is a possible complication assoicated with UC. It would probably have manifested whether or not you had surgery.
