Hi ladies.. I had my 1st surgery (temp ileostomy and jpouch) in late March. Problem is that I have not menstruated since mid-February. My gut reaction is my body has put things on hold due to weight loss and/or maybe shock to the system (ie surgery)? I lost about 10lbs and am having trouble gaining it back - this is about 10% of my body weight. Did this happen to anyone? Words of advice? Will this correct itself or should I go to the gynecologist? Any input would greatly be appreciated

It is fairly common for menses to temporarily cease following major illness or trauma such as surgery. Sudden weight loss also is a contributor. You are correct in assuming that it is the body's way of preventing pregnancy during times where the mom would be under extra stress and less likely to be able to carry to full term. It should turn around once you are back to normal. I would just stick to your normal exam schedule with your OB/GYN, unless you develop other symptoms.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

The one thing I noticed after my surgery was when I did have my period it would hurt like heck...Never had a problem with it untill after the J-pouch...I no longer have periods(yea!) So if you are like me don't wish that thing back too quickly!

I went to my primary care Dr. last week because I haven't menstrated since my first surgery (2/18/08). My Dr. wasn't too concerned that I've missed a few months of periods. She did a few blood tests and a pelvic exam to make sure everything was normal. Thankfully the exam and tests were normal. She said that if I should wait until 3 months after my last surgery (4/21/08) to seek treatment for missed periods. She said the treatment would be a few days of progestorone (sp?) and that sould 'kick start' things.
If you haven't had an exam in the last year it would be a good idea to get checked out.

Mine came back as soon as I was back on my hormone. It takes some time.

I was on the pill, and I was still messed up for a few months after both surgeries. I think being in peri-menopause didn't help things.

Have a fabulous day!
