So, my GI told me that the b/c pill I was on (Yasmin, not YAZ) was very bad for people with autoimmune diseases. I stopped taking it and I do feel better except for the week or two before and sometimes during my period. I've had migraines for years, and they improved for a while, but have started coming back, especially around my period. I also get really sick at my stomach (lots of diarrhea, sometimes I vomit) and it's just getting to the point that it's intolerable. He suggested a pill with a higher estrogen base, but I have had trouble finding something like that. I'm going to talk to my general practice dr. about it, but wondered if you ladies had any suggestions.

Thanks!

I loved my Yasmin. Wanted to go back on it but my internist said it might not work the same since the surgery. She suggest depo, nuva ring or the patch. Hope that helps.

I take an oral contraceptive called "Kariva". My doc writes enough refills so I can take 2 or 3 packs back to back without taking the sugar pills. (Like a seasonal pill). I do this to avoid migrains that were obnoxious and would occur around the time of my period. So now I only get my period every 3 months or so and the migrains are not as intense when I do get them, which is not often. I am not sure if this pill might work for you?

Also when I do feel a migrain, the instant I suspect one, I take 2 pill of Naratriptan even though it recommends only 1 pill first and a second an hour later. I find if I take both pills at the instant I feel a migrain approaching, It will be way less intense and sometimes I can avoid it all together. It is handy to keep the prescription on hand at all times.

Sorry I keep posting, I forgot to add that I cut the pills in half with a pill cutter and take them with hot tea if possible to dissolve them ASAP so there is little chance of passing them through the ostomy or j pouch before they get dissolved. Hope some of this helps. Smiler

I am not allowed to take any bcp due to possible blood clots as I have another issue that I need to be careful for. So I am not sure what to take...at the moment I am taking nothing...I am not having sex either, so I'm not really worried about not taking anything. The Pill is a no-no and I have my doubts with the injection....I was very ill with my UC when I was in hospital and developed blood clots which became the cause of other issues and now I'd rather not be on anything with hormones in...would be great however if I could find something that's safe....guess I would have to see a gynae when I do have the "guts" for a proper relationship???

Good idea Rosie...that was my doc's concern...that I would pass them before they dissolved. Which probably would have happened in the begining...my transit time has greatly decreased in the last 2 years. Smiler

I have a friend w/ a clotting problem who uses an IUD w/o hormones, but she still has issues w/ her periods-they last a long time, etc. I am having okay luck just doing condoms now. I talked to my family doc and she said my migraines were likely to get worse on b/c pills, so I'm just kinda going a naturale for the time being.

Often shorter placebo intervals can be helpful for those with migraines around periods, which your doctor most likely knows. Or consider Seasonale or Seasonique which are the pills where u take pills for 3 months and just have 1 period a month.

Well, looks like I can't take anything anymore. I have Lupus too, and there's a risk of blood clots w/ that, and can't do anything w/ a hormone.
