Hi all,
I have been reading all the posts on the site and they have all been so helpful. I just had a quick query. The surgeon suggested to wait a year before trying for a baby after surgery. I had a three stage procedure and have had my final closure 6 weeks ago and wondered how long others have waited before trying. We would love to start a family and I am 28 at the moment. I know there may be complications and so want to have as much time as possible to try. Thanks, Corrinne |

I think the first thing is that you feel healthy. Pregnancy can be taxing on the body, so you want to go into it feeling as strong as you can.
I was told to wait 1 year after my first round of surgeries (2-step jpouch). I continued having issues, so it wasn't even a consideration until after my pouch removal surgery. That surgeon (a different one than the first surgeries) told me that as long as my c-section was 1 year after my surgery she was fine with that. That would have meant 3 months post op. That felt too soon for me, so we didn't start trying until 6 months post op. However, we had trouble getting pregnant and ended up doing IVF 2 years post op so my c-section was almost 3 years after my last surgery (I was 34 going through IVF). So, I think most drs say wait at least one year post op, but it really depends on how you are doing and the specifics of your recovery. |

Thanks for the reply and I guess that makes sense to get my body back to as healthy a state as possible. I am just impatient I guess.

I suggest that you start taking a good multi vitamin - even a prenatal one - now. Also, slowly start to work back to walking, or some other kind of stamina building exercise. I wasn't in fabulous shape when I got pregnant, but was extremely healthy, was walking regularly and had been on prenatal vitamins for a long time.
I felt pretty good throughout my pregnancy except for a blockage in the 5th month which wiped me out for a bit. After that cleared, though all was well. But you won't believe how tired you are in the first and third trimesters - hence, starting out as strong as possible! |

I also was told to wait one year from creation of the j-pouch, i started trying a little under a year and fell pregnant in four months. I started to take folate and iron tablets a few months before i fell pregnant. I was 25 at the time. My daugher is two on the 27th April and its been the fasted 2 years of my life lol Good Luck Suzanne |

Hi Corinne
It was a while ago that I talked to the sugeon about it, and I was much younger so didn't pay all that much attention... but my impression was that I should not be in the position of giving birth before 1 year was up... So I'd assume it wouldn't be the end of the world if you got pregnant slightly early, and unless you've had significant probs I wouldn't worry too much (although always heed medical advice... I'm not an expert... please don't take me too seriously!) One thing I've really come to believe is that if your body can't handel a pregnancy - you won't get pregnant! So you'll know when you're healthy enough! Good luck! Caroline x |
