fistula, douching, & sex

Okay I understand why douching is NOT a good idea with a fistula. I understand how, shall we say, certain bacterial-infested "bits" can be forced up & in by douching, resulting in infections, inflammation, and so on. My question is, wouldn't -- or couldn't -- sex do the same thing? And, on a slightly different note, can sex with a person with a fistula cause any problems for the partner?

Gin,

I have been living with my RV fistula for almost 3 years now. I notice that yours is rather new and is most probably freakng you out. I have chosen to live with the 'side effects' of my fistula rather than attempt to fix it. I don't try to discourage people from repairing their fistula, but I do know that RV fistulas are rather hard to repair. At this point my fistula doesn't bother me enough to risk any type of possible pouch impairment. That said, I can tell you that sex is not a problem for your fistula. Smiler
I don't know how bothersome your fistula is but I can tell you that I take one tablespoon of Metamucil every morning and it really makes all the difference for me. I don't have alot of time right now, but you can PM me with any kind of gory questions about the fistula. I do remember how devastating the fistula seemed at first, but it's just an adjustment now(as the pouch once was).

Good luck. Take it easy.

Normal intercourse is different than douching because it does not destroy the typical balance in the vagina. I suppose that it is possible for your partner to develop an infection, but not likely, since he has his own defenses too. However, it is a good idea for both of you to empty your bladders following intercourse, to flush out any bacteria that may have found their way into the lower part of the urethra.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Thanks; you're right, I am freaking out about this. I've just finished yet another surgery and "recovery" and this appears, plus other problems. Things just seem to drag on and on. I see my GI tomorrow and might well have other questions then.
