Hi,
When I was 15, I had bad colitis and had my colon removed and a JPouch created. When in my late 20s my huband and I wanted to start a family, but we had fertility issues (I believe due to the colitis surgery), but thanks to the miracle we had our son through ivf. Last year we started trying again and have had 4 BFNs (3 FETs and 1 IVF). We swtched clinics and after many tests my dr saw lots of inflammation. Because of my JPouch surgeries, he's suspecting and treating me as though I have endometriosis but hasn't confirmed it as he doesn't want to perform a laporoscopy on me. The dr also recently did an HSG on me and discovered that my whole right tube is blocked. He suspected a hydrsalpinx and from what I've read, the best treatment is to have the tube removed (otherwise, it greatly reduces our chance of ivf working). Thing is, the surgery is done laporscopic. So I'm wondering if anyone has had laporoscopic surgery with a JPouch? And could it be done without damaging your pouch? |

I don't know the answer to your question. I think you should definitely consult with your J-pouch surgeon and see that he/she thinks about it. It could be that it would be fine. Does your current doctor that would be performing the surgery have a knowledge of J-pouches? I would want to make sure they were educated about them and were very careful.
Hopefully someone else that has more information will be along soon. "...all things work together for the good of those that love Him..." Romans 8:28 |

Lu31,
I had Lapro surgery twice after my j-pouch surgery to fix fertility issues. There was no issues with my j-pouch. For the 1st procudure, I was very nervous so my colon surgeon was also present during that sugery, but when he looked inside all looked good. They also spent some time trying to clear out some of my scar tissue since they knew I wanted to get pregnant. I would suggest to tie off your right tube and not removing it. Studies show that it helps with blood flow and is an easier procedure. This is what I did on my left side. This was the 2nd Lapr Surgery. The 1st lapro one with the try and fix the left tube and fix an issue with my utures. I had a septum splitting my uterus in two. This has a lower live bith success rate so I opted to get that fixed as well. The 1st surgery went well with fixing the uturus, but the tube got the fluid again... so we just then tied it off. I am lucky though b/c my fertility specialist is familiar with j-pouches. So it does give me a bit more confidence. Hope this helps and good luck to you. Nicole This message has been edited. Thank you so much for your responses.
Olive, by coincidence, our fertility dr's father has had the surgery so he knows about it. He also knows my gastro so that's a bonus. Nicole, it's comforting hearing that everything went great for you with no issues from the lap. How long was recovery time for tieing off your tube? And the fluid has stayed away when tied? THanks for sharing your experience. I have a follow up with our fertiliyt dr in 2 weeks time so am anxious to hear what he recommends. Thank you..good luck to you too. |

Lu13 I don;t know if you remember me but my son is the same age as your son I think. May 05. Anyway Did you have a hsg before you had your first child? I'm asking because we have just failed 2 freash IVF cycles. They hae found fluid in my belly but not connected with tubes of uterous. Nobody know why it is there except maybe from surgery. Now I'm thinking maybe it is fluid in my tubes. The RE can't fugure out why it is not working. After my c-section my OB says I don't have a lot of scar tissue that would be interfering with conception. RE says it is dumb luck.

msozz, hello! How are you? Yes...my son was born end of April 05...so very close to yours. So sorry about your failed ivfs. It's really hard and puzzling when it's worked for us a first time isn't it? I did not have an HSG with my son, but they did do a sonohysterogram and didn't see any issues back then. So as far as I know, these issue with my blocked tube (and probably hydrosalpinx) has happened since my son was born. I hope 3 times lucky for you. Did you ever get your tubes tested?

Lu31,
I just had to wait one menstral cycle after I had my tube tied. Within 48 hours I was feeling back to normal. Compared to what we have all already been through, this was nothing. I've had no issues with the fluid since I had it tied. It has been great. Let us know how your appt. goes in two weeks. Wish you the best! Nicole |

Lu31,
Hi, I don't want to scare you but I had a bad experience last year. Same issue, blocked L tube withh fluid in it. The Re I was using then did not have J pouch experience so I opted to have my colorectal surgeon there. Glad I did. I don't think my pouch was ever in danger although that was my initial concern. As it turns out I have a LOT of adhesions and they were not able to do the surgery laproscopically and had to open me up in order to see anything (I had consented to this before hand). Once they were in there they tied off my L tube and could see that although my R appeared open on HSG it was very tangled in scar tissue and R ovary was adhered to the pouch. My recovery was obviously much longer because it was major surgey. I'm glad I did it though, it gave us a lot more information to work with. i'm getting ready to start my first round of IVF, should be starting lupron this week. Good luck to you, it is always scary because you never know what they'll find until they are in there, it is encouraging to hear others have had lapro with out any issues. I've had good days and bad days and going half mad days... |

Nicole, good to know that with a lap, the recovery time was pretty quick. Thanks for your good luck wihses. Our follow up is one week today. Good luck to you too.
Lisa, thanks for sharing your experience with the other side. I'm so sorry that it turned into major surgery for you as it wasn't straight forward. Thank goodness your colorectal surgeon was there and all that is in the past. That's exciting that you're starting ivf now. Sending you lots of good luck wishes. |

Hey Lu31, sory for the late response. I had my tubes tested in 04 before my son was born. They were open and that is when they found fluid in my belly. My ovary is sitting in a pile of fluid (we have nicked named it muck). I had it drained numberous times and it is old blood. Nobody know where it is from or how it keeps getting there. The RE has assured me that it should not interfere with ivf.
I'm going to be in Toronto in August. My husband it from NOrth York. Maybe we could meet? |
