Hi all,
Or had another one? What was the second pregnancy like? I swing from wanting another baby to not wanting cause i'm terrified something else will go wrong. Let me give a history update. In 2005 at 29wks into first pregnancy was diagnosed with acute UC I'd never had uc before and to get it like i did when pregnant was just horrible, the doctors didnt think i'd make it,they had never seen it come on so fast and so aggressive, but it did and thats life. All is well now though, had final op in July 06. Now back to my current delima, has anyone else had a similar experience, gettting UC whilst pregnant then being unsure after all ops are over whether to try again? |

Ok is anyone going to reply to my post? Or am i on my own?
Surely someone out there got UC whilst they were pregnant and had't had UC prior to pregnancy?????? Anyone??? I'd really appreicate hearing from anyone else who's UC experience was similiar to mine. Even if some people got UC straight after having a baby??!?! I know its kinda rare but there has to be at least someone?!?!?!?! |

A girlfriend of mine got UC during her first pregnancy. J-pouch shortly after delivery. She got pregnant 2 years later with #2 and had a completely uneventful pregnancy and normal delivery (her kids are now 6 and 3). She doesn't visit this board any more as she has no pouch issues.
I have three other pouch friends who have had babies, but didn't get UC during or just after a pregnancy. Two had very normal pregnancies (and one had two babies) with some issues here and there, but not much different than the issues my non-pouch friends have had in pregnancy (non-pouchers got constipated, pouchers had more output). The other woman had problems with obstructions during her pregnancy and needed surgery 6 weeks after the baby was born to correct things; the baby was healthy however, and the MOm is considering #2 sometime around the end of the year. I don't have a pouch any more but a perm ileo. I had a near total obstruction in my 5th month (due to growing uterus pinching off the intestine), but otherwise had a normal pregnancy. My son is 13 months old and we are now trying for #2. Hope that's helpful! |

I was diagnosed with UC at 30 weeks pregnant with my now 13 year old daughter. I was hospitalized until she was born at 34 weeks. I was fortunate to have my UC settle down just after she was born and I didn't have j-pouch surgery until 1 1/2 years ago. I didn't have other children after her because the idea of being pregnant with UC and the medicines scared me. I no longer can have children so my comments are only hypothetical at best. If I was younger, post j-pouch surgery and doing well and really wanted another child I would find an OB who was knowledgeable of our issues and go for it! I wish you the best in your decision. JillM and LMac thank you so much for replying to my post.
I was starting to think i was on my own. JillM you hepled alot by telling about your friend who got UC with first bub, then had j-pouch,then had an uneventful 2nd time round. Made me think at least theres one person out there who's been through what i went through and took the leap of faith and tried again and come out the other side with no dramas. LMac you too hepled, i can understand how scared you would have been to go again and if i'd have been in your shoes would have done the same thing and been satisfied with one. My UC refused to calm down after my pregnancy, all the doctors were hoping it would and said i just needed time and if it hadn't have been for a Midwife postpardum who asked to see how much blood i was passing and when i showed her she raised the alarm bells for the doctors and i was transferred to the big captial city in my state the next day that the Doctors wouldn't have relaised til it was too late and i wouldnt be here today. I had UC a total of 3months and thats all my body could handle it was just so fast and aggresive it took everyone by suprise. But now like i said i'm healthy and happy and have all that behind me. My pregnancy was a dark time for me as i'm sure you can relate to. You wanted to be happy for the baby but for me it was un uphill battle, thus also why i'm alittle scared to go again, scared all those horrible memories and feelings will come back and haunt me. I know i shouldn't dwell on the past so much but at times its easier said then done! Anywaya i've rambled enough. Thank you both for taking the time to reply and take care Aussie G |

Hi there,
Sorry I didn't see this post sooner. I developed UC while pregnant with my second son in 2003. Things got much worse after he was born but once I got on the meds they settled down some and I didn't have to have surgery till Oct 2005. But those two years were filled with numerous hospital visits (ER and admitted once), lots of meds and feeling horrible with no energy at all. When my husband and I were planning to get pregnant back then we were set on having two babies and that would be enough (3 kids in total). Well, I have actually not felt well enough since 2003 to even want to have any other kids. We have a 13 & 3 year old and that is our family now. I do have a friend however that has a j-pouch and has had two beautiful little girls. She did have a couple of miscarriages before she had her babies but the two that were born were pretty uneventful pregnancies and no troubles at all that I am aware of during birth. She chose not to breastfeed on the chance that she could become dehydrated but other than that everyone is just fine. I wish you all the best in planning the future of your family. It's never an easy decision regardless of what your medical history entails. ** Christine ** UC dx Oct 2003; Step 1 - 10/8/2005; TakeDown - 05/19/2006; pouchitis dx Dec 2006 The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace. I was diagniosed with UC 8 months after I had my second daughter. I ended up in and out of the hospital for about a year then I had surgery for the pouch. Now I to am thinking about having another child. But all I can think about is EVERYTHING!!
I try to tell myself that every pregnancy is different, and now I am probably more healthy now than I was every. I really want to have another baby. Who knows what will happen!! Keep in touch would like to know how things work out for you. Rainia |

I was diagnosed with UC while pregnant with my first of 3 children. Actually, pregnancy was when I felt the best. That's probably why I did it 3 times. My UC would not act up as bad during these times. However, my youngest child is 5 and I am just now having surgery. My surgeon did not want me to have anymore children after j pouch surgery, but I do know that it is possible.

Hi Aussie_G,
I am also a fellow aussie. My story is different than yours as I was diagnosed with uc just after I had my 4 1/2 year old daughter. I had total colectomy in mid May 2006, reversal in August 2006 and fell pregnant in September 2006. I am currently 27weeks pregnany, due to have a c-section June 10th. Apart from the fact I am having a c-section and going to loo alot no 2 12-15times daily I am having an uneventful pregnancy. Good luck with it all. Mel. |
