I after a day or 2 I get an itching under my wafer. I use only the barrier wipe and get a very good seal. When I change my wafer, the skin is a little red from the wafer, but otherwise in good shape, and no skin deterioration as far as I can tell.
Would the ostomy powder help, and how do I use it? Do I moisten it with a barrier wipe to make a paste, or just spinkle it on and wipe as usual with the barrier wipe. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Harlan,

i find when i get an itch like that it means (for me)that is some liquid waste that has gotten in there...doesnt always mean a leak, but i`ll usually change the wafer next morning

I agree with gerard, I get the itching when some of the liquid waste gets under my wafer. I always use the ostomy powder, but it doesn't seem to make a difference with the itching.

After changng my husband illieostomy bag evry other day, I became very good at it. I found that by cutting the wafers exactly the size of his stoma and not leaving a gap for poossible contact from feces to the skin, elievated the possibility of iitching. I used stoma powder and adapted pasted everytime we changed. He only complained of ithing if he had leakage from have t watery stool. Try adding some fiber to your diet if you haven't already to kept your stool onsistent

Okay, here's the thing - there is NO leakage; that's not what's happening.
As a matter of fact, the area directly around the stoma, and under the eakin seal is fine. nothing is getting under the seal, or past it's perimeter. It's more the outer inch and a half, all the way out to the border of the wafer.
Also, is that outer 3/4 inch of the wafer just adhesive to hold it to the skin, but not really part of the seal? That is, only that smooth pectin part seals, and that outer, ridged area is just added support?

Outer itch could be due to moisture on the skin, or dry skin. The wound care nurses always told us to clean under the wafer with water and no soaps. I would usually change my husband after he showered with the couple of day old wafer on, and then put a new wafer on. Which seemed to work much better and had less irriation or itching. You can also use the stoma powder on those areas also. If you the skin barrier protection wipes. Puffed the powder on after you apply it.

I gave this problem sometimes and make sure it is very dry under the wafer when I put it on. I've used lotrisome anti fungal cream, rud it in really well then wipe it with a dry wash cloth so the wafer will stick. I do get some itching even when all is clear under the wafer. The wafer and stuff around the stoma hole is supposed to have healing powers. I use the coloplast also. I think the skin misses the air!!! I haven't tried a different kind. I so know itching was much worse when I had my temporary ileostomy. Still better than the butt burn with j-pouch. If you have to shave the area there is something called foliculitis which is an infection of the hair folicle. Not sure what you do about that.

Stop the barrier wipe - those things tear my skin up. Go with less is more. I agree you need to try a new product. You akin shoul not be this red. I used to use combated products and they had a large paper tape area beyond the latex wafer and I would cut that down to under an inch with no problems.
