Ok, so... I'm super confused about what is ok to eat with my ileostomy. I know what thickens and what thins, and I eat lots of cooked veggies, and almost never any raw ones (occasionally I steal a few bites of salad) I am avoiding corn, celery, peas, nuts, and dried fruits... do any of you eat these things? Are they ok in small amounts? I just really miss some of them, and am tired of having to worry about what I can eat when I go out.

I eat anything and everything. If my output is thick, so be it. If it's watery, that's fine too. Life's too short to worry about the consistency of my poop
I'm not a complete idiot - some parts of me are missing!

I completely agree with Shaz! I eat salads and raw fruits and veg and nuts and as long as I chew really well and drink plenty then I don't notmally have a problem. If my poo too thick to pour out of my bag when emptying then I simply swish with water to this it out. Takes two mins max.

Thanks all.. I have just been worried about obstructions... My 3 hospital stays since January (first was diagnosis, then surgery, then a GI bug that led to severe dehydration) have me a little on the careful side, but the longer I have the bag.. the more I just want to live life normally.

As far as thickness of output, if I eat something I know will make it thick, I chug some water. It will go through you fast and thin things out. But when I do that, I don't count chugged water as part of my daily intake.
I'm glad this was brought up because I've been playing it pretty safe and I really want a salad. Like I want to cry when my husband orders one at dinner and I have to sit there and watch him eat it! I'm 4.5 months out. Have I given it enough time to go ahead and give it a try? A small amount? I did have some cooked green beans the other night and didn't have any problems. They were SO good!! I think I'm playing it too safe. OH, also, popcorn. I'd kill a man for some buttery popcorn! Kill.
Thanks, KC

I too eat it all...my only caution foods are undercooked broccoli (which I KNOW caused an obstruction) and lots of nuts. I do eat nuts, I just stick to a handful and chew, chew, chew. Raw fruits and veggies are fine, peas are fine, salad fine, really nothing else has been an issue.

None of my obstructions have been directly due to food. I have a very bad adhesion problem and that's what usually puts me in hospital not the food. Food will back up if there is a narrowing which is why I chew to oblivian and drink lots when I eat but I've not had one particular food that's brought it on, it's just confounded it.
I eat all the things that are supposed to be problematic... sweetcorn, mushrooms, the skins on jackets, salad veg and even grated raw carrot. The only thing I avoid is really high fibre bulking foods such as wholegrain bread and cerial such as All-Bran, but that's only because it makes my output too thick which is uncomfortable to pass and a pain to emtpy. If food was the cuprit I'd be obstructed ever day.
Go ahead and experiment. Start with just a small portion and see how you go. Just remember.... chew chew chew and drink plenty.
Good luck

Hi everyong ! I'm new to this site, but SO pleased I found it. I'm now 8 months into my ileostomy, and so far the only thing I've avoided is nuts. I just don't want to even try them! I use ground almonds in cakes, and that seems fine. I now eat salad - I peel cucumbers, and make sure that toms are very thinly sliced. I had some cooked beans for the first time the other day, and they were fine too. Grapes can hurt to pass though, so if the skins are really thick I spit them out ! I take the skins off apples, and pears - haven't dared try those with skins on. The same with potatoes. I love popcorn, but haven't dared go there..... same with sweetcorn. Compared to what I was eating when I had the Ulcerated Colitis - I have a fantastic diet now !! Angela.

i just got my permanent ileostomy in april and so far i have been able to eat whatever i want but i do have some issues with ice cream/dairy queen ice cream cake and cake...after going to a few birthday parties and then using the bathroom the whole next day i figured that out lol...guess i can't have my cake and eat it too haha and also coca cola and i guess caffeine in general i avoid for the same reason. but if i want to eat it i can and i have no pain- just diarrhea...but i eat salads and nuts, fruits, veggies, popcorn...the only thing i am afraid to try that i have not and want to is corn on the cob mmmmmmm ...i will try it soon tho...but i won't eat the whole thing, just nibble...i think the key is to chew will, drink lots of fluids, and not overdo it with any food...just have to experiment and try new things or you will never know. i don't want to miss out on things - if i have to lose my jpouch and have an ileostomy than i want to at least get back the joys of eating good food! lol.
