I'm a 3 stepper so I had an end ileostomy and that was fine to deal with. Wednesday, I had my jPouch created and got a new loop ileostomy but the opening on
this loop ileostomy is so close to my skin that my entire stomach just got covered
with "stoma fun juice"....

Does anyone have any good tricks of dealing with this one? The end ileo was super easy compared to this one....

I need some good tips please!!

My suggestion would be to try a convex wafer instead of a flat one. Is your stoma almost flush with your skin? The convex wafer helps them kinda pop out. I usually try to change mine before eating anything and I do it in the evening before dinner. You could try taking a couple of immodium, lomotil or bentyl at least 1/2 hour before changing your bag, it helps slow things down. The loop ileo is a lot more active than the end. I know a lot of people change their bag in the morning before they get moving around too much.

I had some issues shortly after surgery with the loop and leakage. After my swelling receeded (after a few weeks), I started to have more issues as my skin started to get folds. Like country girl suggested, I also went (and stil do) go with a convex wafer and a belt. I have only had one leakage issue in 5 months with them (and that's because I waited too long to change!)

Assuming that you previously had an end ileo, you had contact with an ostomy nurse? They may be helpful in this situation as well, maybe even with samples to try out to get the best fit. (Yes, I know. I always suggest ostomy nurses, and no, mine didn't put me on the payroll: She was that good.)

("stoma fun juice" - have to add that to the vocabulary!)

I had an end ileo 5 yrs ago and got a loop 5 weeks ago and i hear everything you are saying. some of my tricks were with stomahesive strips to prevent leakage. in addition to the ring, i put horse shoes at 9 and 3 where u tend to leak i also put 3 small strips flat on where i leaked the most right on my skin outside the stoma and put the appliance over it. i went through 20 appliances over a weekend in the hospital with the nurses help. my skin had chemical burns and i sat in the bath (incision must be healed to do this) with mylanta on the outside area...it helped but u have to dry off really well. i cant get over the outpout difference with a loop. it is so watery and the bag is like a balloon all the time. i am concerned about clothes and going back to work. i also switched from hollister to convatec moldable wafers. and i agree with country girl, convex is the way to go with a loop...good luck i havent been on here in forever and forgot how good this place is...

Convex with a eakoseal (sp) is the way to go. Don't use that crappy paste sealant. It sucks! That's your best bet. Also use the powder first and then skin prep on top of the powder. I'm problem free after switching to the convex appliance.

What is the skin prep you're talking about to use on top of the powder?

the ostomy supply stores sell skin prep, it is like an alcohol swab but with skin prep solution, and it just prepares the area a bit around the stoma before you put the wafer on...they even sell non stinging prep if the area is inflamed otherwise you can use regular skin prep. it works....and so does the powder. i also put powder around the stoma after i place the appliance on before i snap in the bag.

I have an lower loop, which acts like and end but is in two parts, like a loop would be, and the lower part of my stoma just became recessed.
I use an adhesive spray, an eakin seal, and then a Hollister convex wafer. This keeps everything sealed up for about 5 days or so

Good luck!

Hi Kim,
An eakin seal is an ostomy acessory which is fit under the wafer and acts like a seal or gasket to prevent leakage and skin damage or breakdown. It comes in donut shaped or flange shaped, is moldable, and self adhesive.
It seals the surface and not only prevents leaks, but helps by also sealing uneven skin.

They are made by Convatec, and they will send you a sample if you call them.

Severla companoies make thier own types, but I like Eakin
