i had emergency surgery about 12 days ago for a blockage which turned out to also have been a perforation at some time...so, i have another ileosotmy...last time i had bad issues with surrounding skin becoming completely raw and bleeding! it is happening agin...i use hollister convex 1 piece, paste, powder and wipes...i know "less is more" but it seems if i cut something out, it leaks...but even though i am not having leaks, i have to change the bag every day because of the burning...there has to be a solution for this...my surgeon wants me to keep it for 6 months! i had it 3 months last time and it was hell. i dont know what to do!!!

When I had my end ileo, I used Hollister convex 2 piece (after my abdomen wasn't so tender and I could switch from 1 piece.
I only used Eakin seals...nothing else. My skin was always clean, they prevented leaks (which is why I started using them). Maybe you should at least try them. Any supplier would send you samples..or your ET Kock 1979; end ileo 2003; Kock 2006; Tpouch 2010 |

im pretty sure i tried that last time...but, its definitely worth another shot...i'd like to get away from the paste, but half the time if i dont use it i get leaks...because the skin isnt smooth because it's already irritated. i will call my supplier tomorrow and see about it. thanks

I used the paste for a while and it ended up being a big part of the burning pain I was having. I think there is a lot of alcohol in the paste and it irritates the skin.

Paste is what irritated my sons skin the most. It has the bad kind of alcohol in it. The adhesive removers we used at the time also contributed to skin issues. We switched to alkare wipes, use no paste and use appliances specific to ileos (hollister new image extended wear). We also use an eakin under the wafer.
I would definitly try to get rid of anything with alcohol in it. Good luck.. Laura 7 y.o. son with CD -colectomy at age 3 with end ileo -IRA with loop ileo 8/08 remicade/elemental feedings |

My suggestion is get Eakins and Convatec convex moldable wafers. Dump all the preps and removers and other things. Maybe stomahesive powder if needed, but keep it as simple as possible. Paste was evil for me, so hard to get off and my skin just stuck to it even as it came off.
Convatec works best for me, but every is different. If Hollister isn't working, change it up. Suppliers or the companies themselves will give you free samples. |

i have a sneaking suspicion it is the paste that is causing me problems....so, i am going to order some convex barrier rings and try just some powder and that...if i could get 3 days wear time, i would be thrilled!! wish me luck!

Interesting theory about the paste, especially since I specifically recall my stoma nurse mentioning that the paste can be very irritating to the skin, especially while the stoma is new and the skin around it is still healing. I was told to use the paste sparingly and to always dust the skin with Stomahesive powder first. If you have particularly sensitive skin, it makes sense that this might be the cause of your problems. Keep us posted!
