Generally, if there is persistent proctitis after colectomy and temporary end ileostomy, it is treated. Sometimes it is resistent to treatment and surgery to remove the rectum and create the j-pouch has to be done sooner than planned. Typically, the treatment is topical mesalamine or hydrocortisone enemas. If those treatments do not control your symptoms, you can also use B&O suppositories (belladonna and opium). Jan
Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Thanks Jan you really know your stuff! I thought proctitis was only experienced by people who have already had the J-pouch surgery. My surgeon has only said that the blood and mucous was "normal" but I really didn't have the pain when I saw him last. I do have an appointment with my GI in November and will ask him. Thanks again!

My son has been using Belladonna and Opium Suppositories for over a year with tremendous success. They are the ONLY thing that helps the pain and spasms he has with his J pouch. Recently, we have been unable to get them and were told by his doctor that they are temporarily off the market. Is that true? Do you know of any pharmacies that ARE still making this product? He is in incredible pain and nothing else in 6 years has worked as effectively as this. I appreciate any information you can provide.

I was told by Walgreens that the manufacturer is not making the B&O suppositories. I would suggest that you call all drugstores in your area to see if anyone has any at all, you could also check to see if there is a homeopathic pharmacy in your area. The Canasa suppositories are working for me so far, I really feel for your son, I know how painful the spasms are. Good luck!
