Okay, so Edgepark Surgical supply sent us a ton of supplies. Our insurance company paid for it. Looks like about a years supply of pouches and wafers. I know what they are for! I know this may sound stupid but I don't know what some of the other stuff is for. Barrier rings? Cohesive seals? Protective Barrier wipes? Lubricating Deodorant? Okay, I know what lubricating means and what deodorant is but does this stuff help with emptying the bag easier? Stuff suppose to slide out easier? Do we really need all this stuff? Most of it is from Hollister. I think the stoma nurse in Spokane ordered it all. Over $2700 worth of stuff. Help?

Woah!
No, sounds like some unnecessary stuff.
Too many flanges and pouches is not good. Your stoma changes size and if you are thin you may not want the same diameter flange. You will probably like closed end filter bags better, did they send those?made by convatec. convatec is more widely used than hollister.
did barrier wipes, are they no sting?
adhesive remover wipes, yes, to help peel the flange off.
only ise dial or ivory bar soap around the stoma. i didn't use barrier wipes, my et said less is best to avoid rashes,
lubricating deo, got me there.Edgepark will take it back if unopened and credit the ins co and send you what you really want.
hole cutters are nice. easier than using scissors but we had them in 3 sizes as the stoma shrunk.Eakin seals are really expensive.
Is your stoma inverted? shouldn't need them if not. Loop or end ileo?

We were sent 20 boxes of 10 drainable pouches, 20 boxes of 5 flanges, cut to fit. 2 boxes of 10 one piece pouches, cut to fit. All Hollister. His Stoma sticks out about an inch and is oval shaped. We haven't tried any other pouches and really don't know where to start. we don't have an ET? Surgery was done in Spokane and we live in MT so we don't know who to ask about anything. Kinda naive about it all!

That is weird that they sent you so much. I wonder if someone made a mistake? I doubt any insurance company would cover that many supplies at one time. I would return some of it unopened otherwise if your stoma changes and you need a different system your insurance might deny the next claim since they have already paid for so much

Call the supply company and find out why they sent what they sent. You should probably start with 2 boxes of wafers (since they are cut to fit they should last through some stoma changes) and 2 boxes of bags. I change my appliance every 3 days, so go through 1 box of each per month. I always try to have at least 4-5 extra set ups in case I have a bad stretch (which has never happened - perm ileo since 2001).

Keep the barrier rings/cohesive seals. These go under the wafer and help slow down/prevent skin erosion. Send back the moisterizer/deodorent. I'm a minimalist, I use a wafer, a bag, an eakin seal (cohesive/barrier ring) and stomahesive powder and that's it. If you find you have issues, then you can determine what other supplies you want.

As for 1 vs 2 piece, the one piece is generally easier post op since you don't have to push against the belly to snap the appliance together. So I'd keep one box of those too. Once the post-op period is over, you can try the two piece and then decide what to do.

Let me know if you have questions.

I always do - helps keep my stoma popped up (mine points down) and gives extra protection to the skin around the stoma.

Good Luck!
