Hi! I'm a new member. Struggled with UC 10 years! My last relaspe to save time I went to a local Gastro doc. His curse turned into my blessing. Tried me on Pentasa which made me major ill. Going every 5 minutes 24hours a day. Forced me to ask admitted at Indy Unv. Hospital & said I want this out, I can't fight this any more!April 17,07 spent 18 days recovering. recently (Sept.4th had 2nd surgery of 3 stage!) It was suppose to be 3 hours and was 8 hours. Was out in 6 days but major problem with new stoma. This one is hunched over & mouth is down near skin. Skin was raw & blistered all around area, also have an open wound from incision healing directly underneath! Went from a 2 stage bag I used with(Problemless 1st stoma)to wax ring & 1stage bag)Still having leakage underneath on right side which does not allow skin to heal or open wound! I've elected to return to work light duty mid week next week & I have to get this bag under control pronto! Physically I am doing great but mastering this new stoma is a serious problem. Final surgery is in 3 1/2 weeks & to save burden of expense I am going back next wed for 6hours a day & then 40 hour week till final surgery! Any advice? Thanks Danny

Hi Danny and welcome.
Firstly, stage 2 of 3 usually means you have a loop rather than an end ileostomy which is notoriously harder to take care of. I would suggest you try a durahesive convex wafer. They are much more suited to the high watery acidic output of a loop ileo than the usual flat stomahesive type. I use Convatec's moldable convex wafers because there is no need for pastes or seals with them, they really do mold to every contour. If you already have sore weepy skin then dust some stomahesive powder on and then pat over the powdered area with a no-sting barrier wipe or spray with something like Cavalon barrier pray. Leave to dry (a hairdrier on low setting will speed things up) and then apply the wafer. I'm sure that there will be others along pretty soon to offer more advice. Good luck with getting the right system. Keep us posted how you're doing. Take care One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

Hi again Danny,
I think you may have ordered the barrier wipes that have alcohol in them, in my experience they sting like billyho even if my skin isn't irritated! The no-sting type don't. If you haven't already I suggest that you contact your stoma (ET) nurse to ask her advice about the best option for you and perhaps she will be able to advise which product will help your skin heal. Here is a link to Convatec's web page featuring the wafers that I use: http://www.convatec.com/convatec/jsp/CVTBProductDetail....US&audience=Consumer You can order free samples from them by either emailing them or contact them by telephone. Hope you get a break soon. I know just how miserable it feels when your peristomal skin is feeling like raw beefburger! Take care and good luck. One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

Shell & everyone out there trying to help;
Must go out & try to get some ouchless skin barrier! Anyone have a brand name? I'm on Alkare & my skin burns on fire! As my new discussion posted explains my horrible night! The surgeon should have fixed this stoma when all the nurses and other doctors were insisting it in the hospital! If there best couldn't make a bag last as long as we are at home it sure isn't a method problem! Now I am wanting tyo use my rectum every time i empty my bag on top of everything else!!! Trying to leak from both ends! Hoping & crying out to God for a better day! Thanks for reaching out to a new kid on the block! Hoping some way we master this! Going back to work next week for 3 weeks when they will finalize this job! I tried to demand it done sooner since he won't fix this, but he said I need 6 weeks from surgury to heal (which is in 3 1/2 weeks! Thanks, Danny |
