I was just hoping someone out there could help us. My cousin got her ileostomy on Dec. 23/08.
She can't get it to stay on. She is lucky to make it a whole day. She came to me for a visit and we changed it 3 times yesterday. We have tried everything. We seen a stoma nurse today and they put her into the coloplast 2 piece with the click bag, with the powder, barrier, (twice) and the paste. She just called and it blew! We are at a loss. Any suggestions? I will let you know if she has tried it. The skin is really raw and red, very sore.

What about convex? At first I had trouble because my output would tear the wafer up and my skin would start to burn within one day. Now I'm in a convex two piece and don't have to use powder, paste or barrier wipes and it will last as long as I want it to.

powder and cream for sore skin can actually make the flange not stick. i used to use cement type of adhesive- it looks like white glue and you just brush it on the skin around the stoma (it won't stick to the stoma itself)...and i know it sounds crazy to put glue over red raw skin but it actually makes a barrier between the flange and your skin and lets it heal...sometimes the redness is because you can be allergic to the adhesive on the actual flange so that barrier protects your skin from it. the glue really helps to get a good seal too. i also used the thick paste or an eakins seal on the flange for extra hold because it stops the stool from leaking out. et nurses seem to be anti-cement glue because it can be too strong for some people and hard to remove but i think everyone is different and it is worth a try if you have tried everything else. i used it for a year and a half and had no skin irritations at all...the only downside was taking a bit longer to change the bag because they are right that it is a bit more difficult to get it off your skin...but if you are careful and patient it is okay...and you don't have to pick off every piece of glue -you can put new glue and flange over it. anyways, this system was great and i could go up to 10 days sometimes without changing the flange (i wore a 2 piece so i could still change the bag part when i needed to). you could also try wearing an ostomy belt that clips onto the flange to hold it tight against you......and make sure that when a new flange goes on that you lay still for a while, like 20 or 30 minutes and hold your hand over it (for body heat) so you get a good seal! good luck to you and your friend! Big Grin

take care

She has tried the different types of paste and the eken seal. She says the one thing she knows is she can't go without the paste because it makes her skin even worse. She is in the 2 piece convex now, she made it to Van without it blowing, but she had to change it again last night. They even gave her a different type of spray on adhesive that was invented for prostetic(?) ears! It still blew.... She also has that skin whitening (like Michal Jackson), can't rememeber what its called, but it starts with a V. My dr. said he had a patient with the samething and they had trouble with the flange sticking, so he suggested she go on B complex, vit C and zinc! She is going to do that, but that won't help right now. I feel so bad for her, she has just had no luck.

Hi

Had similiar problems.

Keraya powder is a better base product than paste and clams irritated skin

I experimented with all brands and types of rigs. Received & tried the free samples from all manufacturers.
Check my posts and especially JasonPa's (Obi-Won) for a long step by step method.

My abs went from a (mostly/near) 6pack to a minefield, looks like a cracked bowl that is upside down and missing a piece (a Crevice), nothing adhered for the first 4-6 weeks.
Now:
I use Keraya powder (for aggravated skin and to prevent its return), then permatype cement, then an Eakins seal, then a Hollister extended wear wafer (stays on better than Convatec if you have a misshapen bumpy area like me, then a Convatec 'snap-on' pouch with the velcro closure (Yes, I mix brands-Holiister lock and roll has a too-short tail for me and sticks out up top when full; I swab the same cement on the 'tupperware' prior to snapping in/on), then wear the 'white' belt; and have gotten up to 7 days though I average about 5 days

Good Luck
E

She hasn't tried the keraya powder or the permatype cement. I think she is coming back to stay with me to see if we can't figure out what to do with her. I have a stoma nurse who is very good, so I will pass this latest info onto her. Thank you. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! My husband Chaz just had step 1 surgery the end of March & I have become a regular on this site. I love all of the info. However, I have never joined ..... until tonight. I just had to respond to your post. Chaz had so much trouble in the beginning as well with his flange. We were using Holister brand. We tried all of the glues & cements. The leaks continued & his skin was getting so bad.

The thing that saved our life was a Convatec Moldable flange. It's exact name is "Durahesive Moldable Convex Skin Barrier....Sur-Fit Natura". I am telling you this flange is AMAZING!!! There is no glue or anything needed. It just molds to his skin. His stoma is very flush to the skin & with the old kind it would constantly leak. His skin was so raw. We started using this & now we can get 4 days out of a flange. We do still put the powder and dab the AllKare wipe over it...but then just stick on the waffer. Oh, I forgot to mention...NO CUTTING either. You just mold the opening to go over the stoma.

I hope this helps! Good Luck!!! Lori

Like Lori and Chaz I am also a big fan of Convatec's moldable convex wafers. They really do mold to every contour and as they are Durahesive rather than Stomahesive they are much better suited to the high acidic output from an ileostomy.

Like CoachE I mix"n"match products. I team up Convatec's moldable wafers with Coloplast's bags. I can do this because both producs have adhesive coupling instead of the clip on tupperware type. This makes my system really low profile as well as really secure. I hated the bags that go with the moldable wafer as they tended to leak at the coupling. Coloplast's version has a double gasket so is very secure. I haven't had a leak (touch wood) in over 5 years since I've been using this system.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing. Take care.

Cool Shell Cool

One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! Wink

hi,
the permatype cement that CoachE talked about is the "cement type adhesive" i was suggesting..it really helped me. i just wanted to also point out that the moldable wafers come not just in durahesive, but also stomahesive that is not as strong so make sure you read the label and buy the right ones. i use the stomahesive moldables cuz the durahesive is too hard for me to peel off. and i have a two piece but it is not the adhesive ones that shell uses- they click together like the lid on a tupperware kind of and they have never leaked or come apart (jsut have to be careful to make sure it is clicked together completely). i also use barrier rings (adapt barrier rings) around my stoma to make a flat surface to stick the wafer to because i have dips and an ulcer under it...having a flat surface can really help (that is what eakin seals and paste help with too). good luck....

take care
