Hey gang,

It has been a while since I've been on the boards, but I still recognize quite a few familiar faces, which is great! I can honestly say after having my perm ileo for 2.5 years now, the only thing I could use to improve is odor control. I use the following now, but am looking for any good tablets you could put in the pouch or eat? Feel free to add to the list, as I'm sure everyone's ideas put together could produce a good arsenal for a lot of people. Good to hear from you guys.

1. Devrom tablet (Parthenon company) (most effective) - this is bismuth subgullate(sp?) and is taken orally. This really reduces odor when I know I'm eating foods I know cause a lot of odor. Only downside, it makes me feel bloated for a long time.

2. M5 Drops (Hollister I beleive)- (effective) - this is the blue drops put into the bag. Works great, effective. Downside, you have to keep putting it in after every change, and it's relatively expensive.

3. Avoid stinky foods. (Somewhat effective)

4. Empty pouch frequently. (Somewhat effective)

5. Change bag more frequent even if wafer doesn't need it. (Somewhat effective, expensive).

Hi Matt,

Good to see you back and in such good form! Smiler

I believe that the best tried and trusted odour control is very cheap and simple to use though I haven't tried it myself because being a girl my poo doesn't smell. Roll Eyes

A lot of my ostomate friends swear by Peroxide 3%. Just a drop or two into your bag every time you empty will get rid of even the most evil of smells. You can pick it up from any drug store/pharmacy and it's very inexpensive. It won't hurt your stoma at all because 3% is really very weak but it really does work.

Give it a try and let us know how you get along with it.

Take care. Smiler

I swear by the 3% hydrogen peroxide because, although I am a girl, my poo does stink Smiler The HP doesn't cover up and overpower the odour, it eliminates it. Gotta love the stuff!

I use the Hollister M9 drops- work great.

Mine doesnt't really have any smell, except when I eat the stinky foods.

If it does, it's usually a sweet smell.

Just in case you're looking for the Hollister drops Matt mentioned, they're M9- not M5. Smiler

Thanks for all of the tips. Shell, I am going to try that Peroxide tip. So they sell it in 3% form, or do you have to dillute it with water? I am excited about trying this , because this would be MUCH cheaper than a lot of things I've tried. Thanks again folks, hope all is well!

Matt

The 3% solution is usually found in the first aid section of your supermarket. It's used on scrapes and bruises and can even be used as a mouthwash.

I've tried everything. M9 drops etc. A lot of them work, but they are bulky and messy to carry around. Right now I use NeutralEz Tabs, a new product from neutralez.com. It's a thin, solid deodorizer with an adhesive backing. You just put it about 2 inches or so above the opening if you have a drainable pouch. Very convenient, cheap, easy to carry around. For me it lasts 1 to 2 days, though some people get up to three days, so when you buy a month's supply of 30 tabs, you get 30 to 90 days of product, depending on what kind of appliance you have. They give away free samples too.

I drink cranberry juice when I eat cottage cheese and it does pretty good for odor control. Don't know about with other foods. Though I've gotten pretty good about breathing through my mouth while emptying, so I don't smell it too much.

I would like to suggest NeutralEz extended wear Tabs. You apply them to the interior of your pouch and they last from 1 to 3 days. Free samples are available at Neutralez.com.

Hi

Try "JUST A DROP".

They have several scents and a drop smells like eucalyptus (for example) and masks chili, garlic and early leaks

They just came out with a more ecomonical large bottle

They offer specials online and small bottle s(trial size)

Very effective

This may sound crazy ... but... for a year now my family (and I ) have dealt with the odor that comes out of my bag. Recently we have found that when I eat Raisin Bran cereal there is no odor. I'm not sure why, but one bowl of R/B cereal totally eliminates all the odor for most of the day.

Coach,
Tried the "Just a drop", and WOW ! Every time I emptied, I thought I was in a Eucalyptus garden. Sounds funny, but this worked all day. Great call, THANKS, Mike
